Iran's Foreign Minister announced his intention to release sailors from the MSC Aries ship detained by the country in the Strait of Hormuz.
Crew members of the MSC Aries, previously detained by the Iranian coast guard in the Strait of Hormuz, will soon be released. This statement was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
According to the head of the Iranian diplomatic department, the country's authorities are currently considering the issue of releasing members of the ship's crew and their subsequent extradition to their home countries. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has already informed the ambassadors of the relevant states whose citizens are the sailors from the international team.
Let us recall that on April 13, 2024, the special forces unit “Sepah” of the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz stopped and detained the container ship MSC Aries, sailing under the flag of Portugal from the port of Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Port of Nava Sheva in India.
According to informed sources, the ship belongs to Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer, which is likely the reason for his detention.
On board the ship there was a crew of 25 people, including, according to some sources, citizens of the Russian Federation. But the Iranian authorities have no complaints against the sailors themselves, so they will probably indeed be released soon.
As we see, navigation in the seas and straits of South-West Asia is indeed becoming more and more complex, which is associated with the general aggravation of the military-political situation in the region. The most problematic routes now are the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
