The United States has decided to tighten sanctions against Iran's oil sector. The corresponding package of laws has already been sent to President Joe Biden for signature after it was supported by the Senate, Bloomberg writes.
As the publication reports, citing data from the lower house of Congress, approximately 80% of Iranian sanctioned oil (about 1,5 million barrels per day) is transported to China, where it is processed at small independent refineries.
In this regard, American legislators decided to extend restrictions to the above-mentioned factories, as well as foreign ports and ships that help Iran circumvent primary sanctions. The restrictions will also apply to transactions of Chinese financial institutions that are carried out with sanctioned Iranian banks.
It is obvious that in this way the American authorities are trying to damage the Chinese economy by depriving their main geopolitical rival of one of the sources of cheap oil.
At the same time, these sanctions may also be a response to Tehran for the actions of its proxies against the United States and its allies in the Middle East, as well as the recent attack on Israel. Let us recall that the Biden administration called on the authorities of the Jewish state not to respond to the large-scale attack by Tehran on April 14.
