According to the Polish Ministry of Defense, a Spanish soldier was killed during a NATO exercise taking place in the country. The department expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
The Polish Ministry of Defense did not name the soldier, but clarified his rank and the circumstances of the incident - it was a corporal who died in an accident, having been fatally wounded during a live-fire exercise.
Journalists from the Spanish TV channel RTVE managed to find out some information about the deceased corporal. The soldier was 43 years old. He is a native of Ecuador who emigrated to Spain. In 2004 he enlisted in the Spanish Army and was awarded the Bronze Cross for services to his country. The man is survived by two daughters. The Chairman of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, also expressed his deep condolences in connection with the death of the corporal.
NATO exercises Steadfast Defender, in which about 90 thousand military personnel from the alliance countries are taking part, have been going on since the end of January and should end before May.
It is worth noting that the death of a Spanish soldier is not the first such incident during these exercises. In March in Poland, five Polish soldiers were also killed during exercises, according to some sources. According to other sources, they could have died in Ukraine, but officially passed away as killed in Poland during maneuvers.
