German press: Germany disrupted the supply of MRAP armored vehicles with enhanced mine protection to Ukraine
Germany left the Ukrainian army without MRAP armored vehicles, disrupting their supply. Ukrainian resources report this with reference to the German publication Bild.
Germany was supposed to supply Ukraine with about 400 heavy wheeled armored vehicles MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) with enhanced mine protection. The corresponding contract was concluded with Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH (FFG). The cost of the agreement is 315 million euros, the deal is paid for by the German government. Deliveries of armored vehicles were supposed to begin in January 2024, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces have not yet seen a single vehicle.
As FFG explained, objective problems arose with the supply of MRAP vehicles. As it turned out, the company does not produce these armored vehicles, but simply assembles them at its facilities from vehicle kits supplied from the United States. And then the license to export American products has expired, and there are problems with mine protection certification. In addition, the delivery plan for this year was reduced from 400 cars to 100.
However, the Germans promise to start sending armored cars to Ukraine in May or June, delivering all the vehicles by the end of this year. It is still unclear which MRAPs we are talking about; Germany previously supplied Ukraine with armored vehicles unsuitable for combat operations, and even purchased at inflated prices. We were talking about FFG APC, which is a licensed copy of the American BATT UMG armored vehicle.
