The Financial Times: NATO and EU allies are putting pressure on Greece and Spain to transfer air defense systems to Kyiv
33
According to the Financial Times, partners from the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance are putting strong pressure on the authorities of Spain and Greece so that these countries transfer their air defense systems to Ukraine.
NATO and the EU believe that the air defense systems of these two countries are more needed by Kyiv than by themselves, the publication writes. It is worth adding that, unlike Spain, Greece has something to fear, since it is in rather strained relations with Turkey, although both countries are members of NATO.
The newspaper's sources report that during the summit of European Union leaders held last week in Brussels, they tried to convince the Spanish and Greek prime ministers Pedro Sanchez and Kyriakos Mitsotakis of the need to transfer part of the air defense systems to Ukraine.
According to the Financial Times, Madrid and Athens are armed with at least ten Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems and a number of other air defense systems. Greece also has Russian S-300 systems, which Kyiv especially wants to get. It is noted that Poland and Romania also have similar systems, but these countries are not under much pressure, since they have a “more vulnerable location” on the border with Ukraine.
It is expected that pressure will continue to be put on Greece and Spain at the meeting of the heads of the EU Foreign and Defense Ministries in Luxembourg.
