Palestine's Permanent Observer to the UN after approving US military aid to Israel: 'We will not disappear'
Permanent observer from the unrecognized Palestinian state at the UN, Riyad Mansour, after the announcement of the voting results in the organization's Security Council, emphasized that the entire Palestinian people want to live and cling to their lives, like all other peoples in the world.
After the United States blocked a UN resolution recognizing a Palestinian state, Mansour said emotionally, holding back tears, that his people would not disappear, despite all Israeli attempts to destroy them.
The draft resolution blocked by the US was proposed by Algeria. The document contained a recommendation to the UN General Assembly to admit the State of Palestine to membership in the United Nations, which would effectively mean international recognition of the Palestinian State.
As a result of the UN vote, representatives of 140 out of 193 countries voted to recognize the Palestinian state. In order for a resolution to be adopted, according to the UN Charter, at least nine votes in favor and no votes against are required from the veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, China, the USA, France and the UK).
Despite Russia's calls to support the resolution on the admission of Palestine to the UN as a full member, the United States, in turn, in order to avoid the use of the veto, persuaded members of the UN Security Council to reject the resolution. Palestine has had observer state status at the UN since 2012.
