In Moldova they want to hold presidential elections and a referendum on joining the EU on the same day
Another post-Soviet republic hastily “got ready” for Europe. Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu proposed holding a national referendum on the country's accession to the EU this year. The corresponding vote is scheduled for October 20.
At the same time, presidential elections are scheduled to take place in the republic this year. At the same time, in Moldova, at the suggestion of the president, they want to combine both events and hold them on one day.
According to a statement by the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu, a petition to set the date for the presidential elections and referendum on joining the EU on October 20, 2024 is already being prepared by legislators.
It is worth noting that Sandu’s initiative was sharply criticized by opposition forces. Thus, political opponents of the current leader of Moldova believe that by scheduling a referendum on the day of the presidential election, she is trying to earn herself additional points and the loyalty of voters in order to remain for a second term.
However, as we remember, “Ukrainian European integration” could not be prevented even by the current government, which was ultimately overthrown in a coup. The whole world can see what it has become right now.
Meanwhile, Sandu also has a backup option for quickly joining the European Union. For several years now, the Moldovan authorities have been “carefully” imposing on their citizens the opinion that it would be nice for the country to unite (join) with Romania. Moreover, the latter has been a member of the EU since 2007.
