Argentina intends to receive the status of a global partner of NATO; the country's authorities have already submitted an application to join the North Atlantic Alliance. Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petri announced this.
The head of the Argentine military department arrived in Brussels, where he met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, during which he handed over a letter requesting consideration of Argentina's application to join the alliance as a global partner. The Argentine authorities plan to restore all ties with the alliance by introducing NATO standards into the armed forces.
I met with Mircea Jone, Deputy Secretary General of NATO. I gave him a letter expressing Argentina's request to become a global partner of this organization. We will continue to work to restore ties that will allow us to modernize and train our forces to NATO standards
- said Louis Petri.
The reasons for this decision are not stated, but most likely they are connected with the new President of Argentina, Javieros Miley, who took a sharp pro-Western course, practically cutting off all ties with Russia, but establishing them with Ukraine.
It is worth noting that in Latin America Colombia has the status of a NATO global partner since 2018. Since 2022, it has also been a major US ally outside NATO.
