Hungary has been moved: the new largest consumer of Russian gas in Europe has been named

The new largest consumer of Russian gas in Europe has been named according to data for February. It unexpectedly turned out to be France.

European statistics testify to this.

The French have moved Hungary, which previously occupied it, from first place in terms of volumes of purchases of Russian natural gas. At the end of February, they paid more than 322 million euros for fuel from Russia. Compared to the previous month, purchases increased by 10 percent.

Back in December, Hungary occupied the first place in Russian gas imports, but in February it sharply reduced purchases, reducing their volume in monetary terms by a third. It amounted to 210 million euros.

While Hungary traditionally buys pipeline gas from Russia, France receives LNG from our country. Spain also receives Russian liquefied gas. In February, she purchased it for 118 million euros. This country occupies third place in the ranking.

If we take into account the dynamics of purchase growth, then Greece is the undoubted record holder. It began to buy almost eight times more Russian gas than before. Greek consumers paid 110 million euros for it in February.

Finland and Sweden, which recently joined NATO, also showed increased demand for fuel from Russia. They began to buy twice as much gas as before. The first spent 6,6 million euros on Russian gas, and the second - 4,7 million.

In total, the volume of gas purchases by the European Union from Russia amounted to 1,1 billion euros in monetary terms.

I hope now Macron will join Orban and Fico... They say Russian gas, and especially discounts on it, have a sobering effect on Russophobes... laughing

This is not exactly our gas. The French are in charge of it. They poured a lot of money into this project. Therefore, it is not surprising that the French government turns a blind eye to these supplies. They allow their own people to earn money, despite the dissatisfied “buzzing” of their EU partners.

I just don’t understand how the French so cleverly concluded a contract with Novatek, who is the intermediary, that they are afraid to violate it - there will be a space penalty. Who is third in this chain.

Andrey, this is an ordinary agreement on production sharing at the Yamal field and the construction of an LNG plant in Sabete with their investments and technology. And until we buy out the French share, they remain full recipients of their share of the gas produced at the plant. As long as they don’t violate the terms of the contract and harm the environment. But since Novatek has the main share here, it is responsible for the environment first.

They froze our assets, and payments to them can also be frozen. Somehow it’s not like a boy that our business is bending towards Europe. Maybe NOVATEK management at SVO? To meet with French "friends"? wassat

The French are not the only ones like this. Look, Japan said yesterday that it does not want to leave its participation in production sharing on Sakhalin-1,2 and we are not against it... Although Japan is the same enemy as France, if not worse. At least France has no territorial claims, but these sleep and see....
This means that this state is beneficial for us for now, and we will always have time to take their share if they take our frozen assets. But for now...

The French share should not be bought out, but frozen. And don’t supply gas while Russian money is frozen in Europe. Macron considers himself Napoleon and the master of Europe - so let him make a fuss, force the return of frozen assets to the Russian Federation... if he wants to receive HIS gas.

The French share should not be bought out, but frozen.

Peter, for some reason I remembered the saying: “I’ll frostbite my ears to spite my mother.” If you follow world gas prices, which fell 10 (!!!!) times, from $2700 three years ago to $280 a week ago, this indicates an oversupply of gas on the market. And this is even with the complete stop of both joint ventures, Yamal-Europe and one pipeline through Ukraine.... Isn’t it obvious that we simply have nowhere to put our gas and we are ready to supply it almost at cost in order to fill the budget.
Freezing the French share in Yamal will not lead to the unfreezing of our assets even in France, where their share is an insignificant share of those 300 billion. The money will not be returned to us, and France will buy gas elsewhere. With all my dislike for our liberals in the government and the Central Bank, I don’t think they don’t know how to calculate and compare the consequences.

It is clear that Russia needs money, but it is still very strange to supply its enemies (who have been very vocal lately) with gas. And this for only 1,1 billion euros across Europe. They shouted that they refused the wrong Russian gas, so let them use expensive American gas, etc. In Europe, they calculated that American LNG costs them 3-4 times more than prices on the US domestic market.

Yes, Stalin would not have tolerated this and shot everyone involved in our gas.... laughing Until June 22, he traded with Germany with anything, but not gas, and that’s different, as they like to say now. But by June 41, the World War had been going on for two years and Stalin understood perfectly well who the main enemy of the USSR was and who would soon attack.... but trains with grain and other products went to Germany without stopping.... Interesting combination, Vlad.. What do you say?

and not like now, 3 years of war with NATO.
Vlad, this is where the whole peculiarity of the situation lies. We did not declare war on NATO and France in particular. Like them, they are not officially at war with us. Yes, you yourself understand this perfectly well; just remember all the US wars after 45, where we helped Korea. Vietnam, Cuba, Angola, Syria, Egypt, etc., weapons, intelligence and even military specialists, not only instructors, but direct participants in battles (pilots, air defense missilemen, etc.). But we did not declare war on the USA or South Africa.... Neither they nor we attacked their ships and aircraft in neutral waters and airspace.
Formally, even now we do not have a war with the United States and NATO. Even funnier, we don’t have a war with Ukraine, just like it doesn’t have a war with Russia... Well, okay, we didn’t declare war on Ukraine, we just called it SVO. But why doesn’t Ukraine officially declare war on us? I listen to the explanations of many of our political scientists about this phenomenon... but it means that something lies behind such tricks of politics. Everyone is afraid to call it a war when all international treaties on navigation and airspace are canceled.

Someone said that it is not clear what military goals Russia has in Ukraine.
The political goals have been announced, these are denazification and demilitarization, but the military ones are not.

Dear anonymous author! European statistics have already provided data for the 1st quarter. TotalEnergies SE, and not France as a state, is a shareholder of Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG-2. This company transports LNG to France, both from the USA and from the Russian Federation. In 2nd place in Europe, per 1 sq. 2024, for purchases of LNG from the Russian Federation - Spain, in 3rd place - Belgium (Huge greetings to Scholz! His country's companies pay Belgium for pumping gas from Belgium to Germany). Hungary reduced gas purchases from Russia in February. What didn’t they write about the warm winter in Europe and the maximally filled underground gas storage facilities? Hungary has been using underground gas storage facilities in Austria for decades." Increased demand for fuel from Russia was also shown by Finland and Sweden, which recently joined NATO. They began to buy twice as much gas as before. The former spent 6,6 million euros on Russian gas , and the second – 4,7 million." An interesting point of comparison - "than before"! Until May 2022, the Russian Federation supplied pipeline gas to Finland. The Finns refused it (Gasum refused to pay for gas in rubles to Gazprom Export), but not LNG. Here are the figures for Finland’s purchase of LNG in the Russian Federation and are growing, fortunately there are LNG terminals on the shore of the Gulf of Finland in the Leningrad region. Garbage from Italy, as fuel for thermal power plants in Finland, turned out to be golden. “If we take into account the dynamics of growth in purchases, then Greece is the undoubted record holder here. It began to buy Russian gas almost eight times more than before.” Add that until 2022 Greece did not buy LNG from the Russian Federation, in addition, in 2023 Greece exported gas with great pleasure to Bulgaria. Smart Bulgarian rulers abandoned the South Stream gas pipeline in 2014. In the 4th quarter of 2023, Bulgarian businessmen calculated how much gas costs them, including LNG from Algeria, the Russian Federation and the USA, what Greece resells to them, and sharply, in 2024, increased the purchase of pipeline gas from Turkey

Darling, what gas are you talking about? About the LNG that Total, as a shareholder, takes from Yamal LNG? So we don't get anything for it. This is LNG Total. For pipeline - rubles. What do Russian companies supply to NATO companies for LNG? Request contracts from these companies, maybe they will send you certified copies, forgetting about trade secrets. “Are we paying with the lives of our boys?” - What are you talking about? About our boys who died in Donbass from 2014 to 2022? About Syria? About North Ossetia and Georgia?
