Kuleba: Kyiv plans to cover the western regions of Ukraine with Polish Patriot anti-aircraft systems
Ukraine is experiencing very big problems with air defense; the available number of anti-aircraft systems is not enough to cover all the most important objects; in fact, now only Kyiv is more or less covered. Against this background, Ukraine is considering various options for organizing air defense.
Kyiv could remove the anti-aircraft systems covering some objects in Western Ukraine in order to move them closer to the front if Poland took over the protection of the airspace over the western regions of the country. According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, Kyiv and Warsaw are considering a scenario in which the territory of Western Ukraine will be covered by Polish Patriot air defense systems. It is not known at what stage of the negotiations.
According to Kuleba, Ukraine is putting pressure on the fact that with this option, Poland will be able to cover its territory from Russian missiles and drones, which supposedly fly there periodically.
- said the minister, without specifying how Poland should protect the west of Ukraine from the same missiles and drones. It is one thing for Polish Patriot systems to be installed on Ukrainian territory, but quite another for them to continue to remain on Polish territory.
If Poland deploys its air defense systems in Ukraine, they will become a legitimate target for Russia, which does not care who owns them. In the event of the defeat of Russian missiles from Polish territory, Warsaw actually enters into direct conflict with Moscow with all the ensuing consequences. Most likely, Poland will simply transfer to Ukraine old decommissioned Soviet anti-aircraft missiles located in warehouses, and that will be the end of it. Moreover, Warsaw previously categorically refused to give up its air defense systems to Kyiv.
