Launch of a super-power Russian laser machine announced for 2020 year.
According to him, the UFL-2 system will have 192 laser channels, occupy an area “about the size of two football fields, and reach the size of an 10-storey building at the highest point”.
“Fundamental research of high-temperature dense plasma will be carried out on this unique equipment, and this will be a center for collective use, where not only Russian, but also foreign scientists will be able to work,” Garanin said.
The laser facility will be located on the territory of the Sarov Technopark, which is located near the closed city of nuclear scientists and the Federal Nuclear Center. “At present, special“ clean ”rooms are being designed, where laser equipment will be installed,” Garanin specified.
The developer of the installation management system is the Nizhny Novgorod enterprise NIIIS named after Sedakov.
In addition, a national center for laser systems and technologies is being created in the Sarov technopark. In the first quarter, design work on the creation of this center will be completed, where, in addition to basic research, it is planned to create prototypes of products and put them into mass production.
As Garanin said, 360 high-tech jobs for young scientists will be created here. The first laser center products - unique laser diodes - are expected to be received by the end of the 2014 year.
Recall that in April last year, Radiy Ilkaev, the scientific director of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, announced that a powerful laser facility for thermonuclear fusion would be built on the territory of the Sarov technology park.
The preliminary construction cost was 45 billion rubles (1,16 billion euros).
Dozens of Russian research institutes take part in the design of the installation.
It was assumed that the construction of the laser facility would be carried out in the closed city of nuclear scientists Sarov (formerly Arzamas-16), however, Ilkaev noted, it is better to do everything outside the closed area to ensure access to it by ordinary scientists, including foreign ones. The installation site was the Sarov Technopark near the city of nuclear engineers.
The length of the laser complex will be 360 m, and the height - more than 30 m, the power of the device will be 2,8 megajoules. Only Russian technologies will be involved in the creation of the complex, while the laser power will be higher than that of a similar facility being built by international forces in France (about 2 megajoules).
The laser will be used for fusion; laser beams will converge at a certain point, where plasma will be created.
Over the past 40 years, a base for creating high-power lasers has been created in Sarov. This direction has become one of the profile for the Sarovsky Technopark created in 2004 year. On its territory of 60 hectares, high-tech productions have already been launched over 30 resident companies.
