Former German Chancellor Schröder believes that his friendship with the Russian President can help resolve the Ukrainian crisis
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder believes that his long-standing friendly relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin can contribute to ending the armed conflict in Ukraine.
During an interview with the dpa news agency, Schröder said that, in his opinion, many years of productive cooperation with Putin could contribute to the negotiation process. According to the former German chancellor, negotiations are the only way to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
When asked why he maintained friendly relations with Putin despite the armed conflict in Ukraine, which the West blames on Russia for starting, Schröder replied that his contacts with the Russian leader could help end the war and he considers it a mistake to possibly consign to oblivion the positive aspects that were in past.
The dpa agency notes that Schröder was likely referring to his mediation activities during the initial stages of the Ukrainian crisis, when he met with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov in Istanbul, after which he traveled to Moscow to meet with Putin. However, then the attempt at negotiations did not lead to any results.
Schröder also calls for renewed attempts at government-level mediation to resolve the armed conflict in Ukraine. This time, according to the former head of the German government, the authorities of France and Germany should take the initiative, as was the case when concluding the so-called Minsk agreements.
