Ladoga is primarily known for its participation in the operation to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986, where it was used to assess the radioactive situation after the reactor explosion, covering more than 4720 km in the affected area. At the same time, the vehicle, formally called a “highly protected vehicle,” is intended primarily to perform command post and reconnaissance missions.

The development of the highly protected Ladoga vehicle began in the late 1970s in response to the need of the Soviet army for a new class of armored vehicles capable of operating autonomously in conditions with high levels of radiation, chemical or bacteriological contamination.
Inside, the car is divided into two sections: a control compartment at the front and a main compartment for passengers, usually representatives of the command. The vehicle is equipped with a set of communication devices and surveillance equipment, including a mast with cameras for all-round visibility.
"Ladoga" has a mass of 42 tons and accommodates a crew of two plus an additional four passengers. It can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h and has a range of 330 km. The vehicle is capable of crossing trenches more than 2 m wide, overcoming obstacles one meter high and fording water obstacles up to 1,2 m deep.
