A scandal erupts in Belgium over hazing in the army
According to the Belgian newspaper De Morgen, a major scandal is breaking out in the country due to the revelation of inappropriate cases in the Belgian army.
According to the publication, the head of the Belgian Ministry of Defense, Ludivine Dedonder, and the Chief of the General Staff, Michel Hofmann, are even planning to hold an urgent press conference on this matter.
The scandal is related to the situation in the 4th engineering battalion of the Belgian army, stationed in the commune of Ame near Liege.
- writes De Morgen, citing an unnamed source.
Up to 30 military personnel, including officers, non-commissioned officers and privates, were involved in hazing. According to the newspaper, about ten people were removed from duty, and one platoon was even disbanded.
The publication’s source said that the investigation into these abuses in the service has been going on for several months, but the cases themselves obviously have a long history history. It is noted that mutual responsibility existed in the engineering battalion for a long time.
So far, official representatives of the Belgian Ministry of Defense have not commented on this situation, but, probably, something will become clearer during the planned press conference.
The Belgian military themselves say that cases of hazing have become more frequent. We are talking, among other things, about assault against junior ranks, the use of alcohol and illegal drugs during combat duty.
