Israel warns allies of possible military invasion of Lebanon
The Lebanese publication Al-Akhbar, affiliated with the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, citing its sources, reports that the Israeli authorities have informed their allies of their intention to set March 15 as the deadline for achieving a political settlement with Lebanon. If the necessary agreements are not reached, Tel Aviv intends to escalate military actions to a state of full-scale armed conflict.
The Deputy Secretary General of the Lebanese Hezbollah warned that in the event of a full-scale Israeli attack on Lebanon, the IDF would face an “advanced version of the 33-day war.” He also stressed that the only way to stabilize the situation in the region is to establish peace in the Gaza Strip.
It is also reported that, according to the American television channel CNN, US authorities do not rule out that the IDF is planning a ground deployment of troops into Lebanon by the end of spring or early summer of this year if attempts to resolve the conflict by political means are unsuccessful.
The publication's sources say the prospect of an Israeli invasion of Lebanon was discussed at an intelligence briefing for senior Biden administration officials. At the same time, Israel has not yet officially announced the decision to launch a military operation.
An invasion of Lebanon by the Israeli army will inevitably involve drawing other countries into the conflict, which currently does not serve Washington’s interests in the Middle East. On the other hand, Israel cannot afford to continue permanent tensions in the north of the country, where the IDF is forced to maintain a significant contingent of troops to confront Hezbollah and respond to the still rare attacks from the territory of a neighboring state.
