Severe frosts in the Donbass and northern Ukraine will become a serious test for Western military equipment

The photo is illustrative.

Severe cold weather in the northern regions of Ukraine and the Donbass could become a new obstacle to the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This is discussed by Western military experts who believe that frosts will become a serious test for Western military equipment in service with Ukrainian formations.

The air temperature in Donbass and northern Ukraine drops to minus 20 degrees. In such a situation, exploitation tanks and Western-made armored vehicles becomes problematic. For example, the fuel for American-made Abrams tanks transferred to Ukraine, according to American military analysts themselves, requires special storage at low temperatures.

Preparing tanks for combat use in cold weather conditions will also require additional costs. Already at an air temperature of minus 12 degrees, problems are possible when operating American military equipment. At the very least, it will take longer to prepare it for use.

Russian military equipment was produced precisely under conditions of such temperatures, so frost will not become a strong obstacle to its operation. And this is yet another advantage of Russian weapons over Western ones.

The same “General Moroz” who at one time thwarted both the Napoleonic adventure and Hitler’s “blitzkrieg”, and today is becoming an important ally of the Russian army. Of course, it will not be so easy for our military to conduct combat operations in such conditions. But still, their situation is much better due to the greater preparedness of equipment for such temperatures.

. Let’s assume that the upcoming “difficulties” were known in advance... and what was done to prevent such problems from occurring?

This is how a lightning-fast “counter-offensive” was planned, on which all the “wet” hopes of the West were pinned. He had to solve these problems. They believed in him so blindly that no plan “b” was even contemplated.

I drove the T-62 tank in the cold - I liked it. On frozen ground the tank accelerates easily, like on asphalt, there is no dust, everything is clean all around.
But I can’t remember servicing it when the temperature is just above zero, when there is dampness, dirt, and cold all around without shuddering.

Fuel, lubricants, necessary winter grades... this is the most well-known/obvious...
In addition to this, a lot of things are needed, corresponding to the climatic conditions of the combat zone... it’s impossible to count everything.

What can you do if the equipment was driven from all over the world? Where to carry out seasonal maintenance and with what? What, where, in what quantity should I pour? I don’t think that PARMs were supplied with a set of equipment and trained personnel along with the equipment.

And there are even more questions about cars from Turkey, Australia and other hot countries. Heaters, preheaters, devices for injecting ether into the intake manifold, insulation for radiators, batteries, and engine compartment are probably not expected.

If only they forgot to change the water in the radiator for antifreeze wassat

Just one question for the author of the article - did he not participate in the exercises at an air temperature of minus 25 degrees and a wind of 23 meters per second? Our equipment is also technology, and it breaks down like any other, according to the same laws of physics and the presence of ignoramuses on this equipment.

This was a long time ago, then no one knew about modern oils, and winter diesel fuel was the exception rather than the rule. Although it may well not be winter in Donbass right now, I hope the guys remember how to heat a diesel tank.
I was generally stunned about fuel for Abrams. As far as I know, Abrams is fueled with aviation kerosene. And kerosene burns well even down to -35.

And I remember that in severe frost, the most ordinary kerosene only became slightly cloudy.
And the Abrams need to be refueled with Aviation kerosene. There the pour point is generally below -50.

“Winter kerosene” is the popular name for diesel fuel with a low paraffin content, extracted by heating oil below the gasoline fraction in the column (roughly looking at the primary process of oil refining). It is paraffins that crystallize in diesel fuel, causing it to cloud (solidify). It is they who are deposited on the walls of the fuel lines, narrowing them. And the worst thing is that the fuel filters are clogged tightly. Winter diesel fuel (kerosene) had the old marking according to GOST, for example Z-02-40 (W - winter, 02 is 0.2% sulfur content in volume, and most importantly 40 is -40g. C cloud point). I bought jet fuel at a hardware store under the guise of TS-1 solvent. This is the old GOST designation for jet fuel - Aircraft Fuel. Practically the purest diesel fuel without paraffin. And I poured the bottle into the tank before the frost. It helped a lot. It was cheap and cheerful compared to the prices of imported additives. A neighbor in the garage was having fun extracting paraffin from diesel fuel. Sunet powders a bucket in a snowdrift in the evening, and in the morning expresses the “milk” through a mosquito net with a cloth. Of course, it wasn’t jet fuel, but the paraffin snot remained on the grid. Without this dirty trick, Ruslan, flying from hot India, would not have collapsed near Irkutsk.

There was also Arctic diesel fuel. Gorgeous diesel fuel. Almost as good as TS-1. And cheaper. But in central Russia it was sold extremely rarely.

In the Soviet film "72 degrees below zero", about Antarctica, there was an episode when summer diesel fuel froze in the tanks of tractors. The supplier, who forgot to bring winter diesel fuel, said that he should have just added kerosene.

Well, it's begun. For those who don’t know, diesel fuel is made for winter use by diluting it with kerosene, and winter kerosene does not exist in nature. Both winter and summer diesel fuel burn exactly the same(!) in any frost. the only difference is the paraffin in the fuel lines laughing

It depends. In the Chelyabinsk region, at minus 25, I walked after school without really noticing the frost. Ruddy came home and that was all. And in the sixth grade I visited Leningrad. We got out of the metro near Nevsky Prospekt. The closest station to Palace Square. My mother and I ran to the Hermitage, dashing through shops. Wrap up your scarf! Why, mom? Minus 18 only. We are from the Urals. Yeah. And I studied medicine here for seven years. He walked through Dvortsovaya to the Hermitage, wrapped up to his ears in a scarf.

And when were there really bitter frosts in central Russia??? I personally remember the frosts in Moscow - 43°, because the planes weren’t flying and I had to hang around at the airport, waiting for it to warm up.
This was a long time ago... but then, I had to travel to places where such temperatures were not uncommon, but the NORMAL!
How are we doing now??? People have relaxed and at a temperature of -22°, half of the cars parked in their yards simply won’t start! To their joy, such temperatures, if at all, occur only for a few days throughout the winter...

Cold, dank weather is not a joy for many, this is a fact.
This is despite the fact that there are more means and methods to keep warm, and simply not to freeze, and they are more accessible.

Back in 1989, I came to Karelia for the first time, right on these dates. Frosts were around -40. So, here -39 was considered warming and we could go into the forest on skis. But below 40 we only walked; ski boots were in the USSR without any insulation. True, the shoe covers on top helped a little. It was only later, when we started walking seriously, that we used cable fastenings and ordinary turbo boots, which by the way were also without insulation, but at least two woolen socks could fit in.

But this is what they say: don’t go to your mother. It will be a test, and a difficult one at that. Or did they plan, like the Germans in 1941, to finish it with a lightning strike and finish it in the fall? Strange. article. To begin with, according to some historians, General Moroz could have been shot for treason, because when the Germans attacked, they advanced on hard, frozen ground. The Red Army was not so lucky when it launched a counteroffensive.
And now a little bit from life: how many houses do we have there without heating in the midst of frost? It seems that everything was also calculated taking into account lower temperatures.
At -25 I was on a train, in a relatively new carriage, where everything that could and could not fail was broken down. In no small part due to low temperatures. Although it would seem that everything in the carriage should have been designed, thought out and made taking into account low temperatures.
And if you consider that the main enemy of all NATO has always been Russia, regardless of ideology and form of economic management, then it seems that they also tried to make equipment that could fight in territories where there could be severe frosts.

The same “General Moroz” who at one time thwarted both the Napoleonic adventure and Hitler’s “blitzkrieg”, and today is becoming an important ally of the Russian army.

It has long been proven that the main factor in the defeat of the Nazis was not the frosty generals and the Red Army, but the Red Army, and the Napoleonic army before Berezena retained sufficient combat effectiveness.

This was a long time ago, then no one knew about modern oils, and winter diesel fuel was the exception rather than the rule.

not only diesel fuel, but also antifreeze

If at -20 their equipment does not work...

What kind of technology are you talking about?
maybe about the Magiruses of the mid-70s? so they were better than both Krazov and Tatra; has much changed since then?
were regularly present at BAM and -50, and had to work despite the frost

It’s like, we’re not even surprised anymore.. It’s hot, then it’s muddy roads, and now it’s freezing...

-20 is this frost? It’s already -30 in Bashkiria today. At the beginning of December there were also the same number. Last year it dropped to -50. And my American Chevrolet Aveo starts at -28-30 without heating. Why shouldn't the Abrams start at -20?
