“Even old howitzers become high-precision artillery”: the foreign press praised the use of counter-battery weapons of the Russian Armed Forces in battles

The effectiveness of the combat use of artillery largely depends on the reliability and speed of target recognition, data exchange and the security of the communication system. On the modern battlefield, accuracy and speed of fire are critical. Under these conditions, counter-battery operations became the main means of achieving superiority in artillery.

As indicated in the Algerian publication MENA Defense, Russia uses for these purposes two interconnected mobile means of detecting and controlling artillery: the Penicillin acoustic-thermal reconnaissance complex and the Tablet-A command system. Working together, they are capable of conducting effective counter-battery warfare, detecting enemy artillery positions at a distance of up to 38 km, determining their coordinates and then quickly hitting them.

“Penicillin” detects targets by registering acoustic and thermal signals generated during artillery fire and shell explosions. This signature is recorded on a digital map, which makes it possible to accurately determine the location of enemy positions. The data collected in this way is transferred to the Tablet-A complex to calculate fire parameters.

As noted, one of the main advantages of Penicillin is its ability to passively recognize. Unlike many similar radar-based systems, it combines thermal and acoustic identification. This allows him to determine the coordinates of artillery positions in less than a minute, without emitting signals detected by enemy electronic warfare systems, which makes him “invisible.”

With the use of these new counter-battery weapons, even the old 2S1 Gvozdika and 2S3 Akatsiya howitzers, which appeared in the 1960s, can become modern high-precision artillery systems. Russia has proven the effectiveness of Penicillin and Tablet-A in battles in Ukraine

- the conclusion is drawn in a foreign publication, giving an assessment of these complexes.

    They admitted defeat.
Therefore, they are looking for an agreement.
But we will finish them off and reach Berlin!

The time will come and we will solve this problem. We have already heard about the nezlamanna fortress of Mariupol, then there was the nezlamanna fort of Bakhmut (which is now Artemovsk). Now it’s Avdeevka’s turn. And then the list goes on.

Radars for counter-battery warfare must be small and massive, and we have all the capabilities to make such complexes. And those that are installed on KamAZ trucks with a retractable mast are long outdated and do not last long.
And in terms of the level of counter-battery warfare, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are significantly ahead of us.

If you take off the pan and think about it, then maybe the thought will dawn on you - “what’s better, go on the offensive, ruining a bunch of your fighters, or grind their counter-grunt?” No, I don’t get it, I don’t get off?

For those who are supposedly “not in the pan”. Who are we at war with? What are the goals of this "war"? What do you mean by the term “win the war” in this particular case? To begin with, you can think about what “qqqq Sergey” writes here.

The question is that there is no particular point for us to storm the OP. The exception is Avdiivka, close to Donetsk. Ukraine does not feel sorry for (not its own) NP and people, so let’s take one, there will be another until Ukraine becomes a deserted desert. And then we have to restore it. I have written more than once that Ukraine is a yoke for the loser. I understand rationally that we need to contrive to force our demands to be fulfilled, without putting the burden of restoration and maintenance of the sick on the head of the population. Although I really want effective operations.

War is a science. Those who are smarter win, the enemy can resist, but there will be a moment when the front may collapse. For example, the Kursk Bulge. After all, everyone knows that the battle was fierce and we lost more people and equipment. But the enemy was exhausted, we struck and they fell! So until the end of the war, NO LONGER could come to their senses.

Don’t act like a fool, Mikhail Batkovich, during the Great Patriotic War, when the position of the Soviet Union seemed “completely hopeless.” And the entire so-called “civilized world,” counting the hours and minutes until the surrender of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army and the Soviet Government, miscalculated. The multinational Soviet People, who accomplished the seemingly “impossible” for the “rest of the world,” managed to win a “GREAT VICTORY.”

Dear Mikhail Malakhov_2 (Ivan Ivanovich), this is too bold a statement. Remember the Second World War... The path to Berlin lies through Nikolaev, Odessa and Kyiv. Without Odessa and Kyiv, the path to Berlin is too long, which will become many times shorter when we liberate these cities from the Ukrainian fascists and other Western evil spirits!!!

So the Algerian publication conducts its analysis of the use of artillery in the Northern Military District and, in particular, counter-battery warfare, noting the effectiveness of Penicillin and Tablet-A. Will this affect Algeria's desire to acquire these systems in the future? Maybe.

Find bearings of enemy artillery positions at a range of up to 38 km. and giving target designation for them is worth a lot. The question is their number on the theater of operations, skillful use and the availability of effective means of destruction. With the advent of the Kralitsiya-SV in service, things in counter-battery warfare will sparkle with completely new colors.

They can, but the enemy may be beyond the firing range of these out-of-date howitzers... We are already in isolation from the models available to the Armed Forces... It’s time to think something, fortunately there are foreign models with the appropriate firing range... .

I looked at the performance characteristics and it shows a range of 25 km.
When identifying a single target, the probability of finding direction is approximately 90%, but what if there is shelling from several positions?

In addition, the detection method implies direct visibility. This means that the radar can be visible, even though it is passive. There may be very few dominant heights in the LBS zone, and therefore the search for such a radar is simplified. This is not very good for a KamAZ-based installation.

With modern means of reconnaissance, communications and control, even weapons inferior in characteristics and mass of use can become very effective. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have also proven this many times. But for high efficiency, speed (an appropriate level) of decision-making is also necessary.

No, dear ones, now is not the time to limit ourselves to Berlin, brown
the infection of fascism and extremism must be completely eradicated throughout the world,
starting with geyropa, the island of bad luck and ending with a large puddle in the west and east,
so that future generations do not even have thoughts of encroaching on sovereignty
    Russia and allies.
And the guns are great against any infection, I hope they can increase the range
We will soon see new ones with an even greater detection and destruction range.

Unlike many similar radar-based systems, it combines thermal and acoustic identification.
Acoustic - this is understandable, it is a ballistic (and muzzle, if close) shock wave. And what is thermal, an IR signal from the surface of a projectile or a flash from a shot?

There has been no counter-battery warfare for a long time; there is only counter-gun warfare. Everywhere in the photos and videos from the front you can see only single guns, both ours and theirs. Modern artillery fire control means make it possible to spread the guns both in range and along the front. It is not enough to determine the approximate coordinates of such a small target; you still need to hit it.

"Everywhere in the photos and videos from the front you can see only single guns"

Because military correspondents only write/show about militias. At real equipped firing positions they are not allowed anywhere near them. Well there with the battery rooted to the spot guns, SOB vehicle, etc. And the grief of spent cartridges.

I am subscribed to the telegram channel of the writer Sergei Kim. He has been on the line of combat contact since October 26 last year and in early October, when ours began their offensive, their unit also took part in this. And out of ten people, nine were out of action, fortunately not all were killed.
Perhaps it was precisely because we were winning the counter-battery battle that they were covered with mines as they retreated? And they were constantly covered with cassette tapes while sitting in defense?
Hurray, the patriotism of individuals has led us to the current situation. Without identifying shortcomings it is impossible to correct them. And if we just say glory to the CPSU, it won’t take long for the Union to collapse. Oh, and they destroyed it... Do you wish Russia the same fate?
I hope not and you are simply sincerely mistaken.

It is not enough to detect a weapon. We need to give target designation to our people and adjust the fire. It’s interesting how the fire is adjusted. After all, it depends on whether the gun will become highly accurate or not. Does Penicillin detect its ruptures or not?
