“Even old howitzers become high-precision artillery”: the foreign press praised the use of counter-battery weapons of the Russian Armed Forces in battles
The effectiveness of the combat use of artillery largely depends on the reliability and speed of target recognition, data exchange and the security of the communication system. On the modern battlefield, accuracy and speed of fire are critical. Under these conditions, counter-battery operations became the main means of achieving superiority in artillery.
As indicated in the Algerian publication MENA Defense, Russia uses for these purposes two interconnected mobile means of detecting and controlling artillery: the Penicillin acoustic-thermal reconnaissance complex and the Tablet-A command system. Working together, they are capable of conducting effective counter-battery warfare, detecting enemy artillery positions at a distance of up to 38 km, determining their coordinates and then quickly hitting them.
“Penicillin” detects targets by registering acoustic and thermal signals generated during artillery fire and shell explosions. This signature is recorded on a digital map, which makes it possible to accurately determine the location of enemy positions. The data collected in this way is transferred to the Tablet-A complex to calculate fire parameters.
As noted, one of the main advantages of Penicillin is its ability to passively recognize. Unlike many similar radar-based systems, it combines thermal and acoustic identification. This allows him to determine the coordinates of artillery positions in less than a minute, without emitting signals detected by enemy electronic warfare systems, which makes him “invisible.”
- the conclusion is drawn in a foreign publication, giving an assessment of these complexes.
