Kfir: the IDF's youngest and largest infantry brigade, specializing in urban combat
Against the backdrop of regular statements by the IDF command about the preparation of a ground operation in Gaza, many experts question whether the Israel Defense Forces are capable of operating effectively in the specific conditions of urban battles.
It is worth noting that the IDF has a special infantry unit “tailored” specifically to perform such a task.
Kfir is one of five infantry brigades of the Israel Defense Forces, subordinate to the IDF central command. The brigade is the youngest, as it was created in 2005. At the same time, the unit’s fighters specialize in the most difficult areas, being responsible for conducting urban battles and guerrilla warfare.
Kfir battalions are deployed near every major Palestinian city, both in the south and in the north of Israel. The brigade's soldiers regularly carry out complex operations that require highly qualified soldiers.
Kfir recruits undergo eight months of combat training before joining the unit. For the first four months, future fighters undergo a basic course, including physical training, discipline and mastery of various types of weapons. The second half of the training is devoted to specialized skills, such as urban combat tactics, mastering the control of armored vehicles, using chemical protective equipment, etc.
In addition, the unit's soldiers take Arabic language courses, which further enable them to communicate with Palestinians. After all, their activities are often associated with direct contact with the local population.
Kfir soldiers wear camouflage berets and red boots. The brigade consists of five battalions.
In 2020, the IDF command decided to gradually transform Kfir into a full-fledged army brigade, like airborne troops. As a result of the transformation, the unit will be replenished with personnel, receive additional weapons, and its fighters will undergo extended training.
Probably, in the ground operation in Gaza, if one does take place, the above-mentioned brigade will play one of the key roles.
