The Indian Ministry of Defense has allocated funds for the purchase of an additional batch of Su-30MKI fighters for the country's Air Force

The Indian Air Force will be replenished with Russian fighters; the country's Ministry of Defense has approved the purchase of an additional batch of Su-30MKI. The relevant information is being disseminated by the Indian press.

The Defense Department on Friday allocated funds for the purchase of weapons and equipment for nine items, including aircraft. As stated, 12 Su-30MKI fighters in the most “modern version” will be purchased for the Indian Air Force. According to one source in the Indian Ministry of Defense, it is planned to equip the aircraft with various types of Indian-made weapons. The aircraft will be assembled at the enterprise of the Indian aircraft manufacturing corporation Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which produces Russian fighters under license.

According to the customer’s requirement, the aircraft will consist of more than 60% of locally produced components

- said the source.

Last fall, Indian Air Force Commander Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhary announced that the new Su-30MKI fighters would be equipped with a new version of the BrahMos missile. If the fighters already in service are armed with a version with a range of 290 kilometers, the new ones will receive an upgraded version capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 450 kilometers.

Today, according to the latest data, the Indian Air Force is armed with 272 Su-30 MKI fighters, of which 50 were supplied by Russia in ready-made form, the remaining 222 were produced at Indian enterprises. As the Indian Ministry of Defense plans, all of them must undergo modernization, as part of which the aircraft will receive various weapons, including foreign ones. In particular, the Indians are adapting Israeli I-Derby-ER missiles to Russian fighters.

Rupees are also possible. But better goods. We do not have enough shipyards, but we urgently need ice-class tankers and gas carriers with a displacement of 150 thousand tons or more. The Indians can easily build them with acceptable quality

Are there not enough of your own? They pay us rupees for oil. And no one in the Russian Federation knows what to do with these rupees, because there is nothing to buy in India with them, and no one needs them on the foreign exchange market.

It would be better for rubles! We would be more interested in this than rupees.

Where do Indians get rubles from? Let them buy it on the Moscow Exchange. Now the exchange rate there is very favorable for foreigners (thanks to citizen Nabiulina). For one buck they sell almost a hundred pieces of wood!

The Indians assemble these fighters at home as designers, and in Irkutsk they simply order kits for assembling aircraft with everything necessary.
True, they install some of their own equipment.

And yes, a distinctive feature of the Su-30MKI is that it can be a mini-tanker using an English outboard UPAZ refueling unit.
The Su-30SM does not have such an option.

But this function (the ability to be a tanker) is possessed by the Su-24M\M2, of which we still have about 200 left in service. It’s no longer worth sending them into battle, but distributing them among air regiments as tankers is quite an option. Let's say one squadron per regiment. And they will refuel tactical aircraft until the Il-78MD-90A is built in the required quantities.

Their plant is now idle, so they are purchasing additional kits in order to maintain the plant and provide it with orders. Well, additional Su-30MKIs will not be superfluous.
No offense to Irkutsk either - additional orders. Everyone needs orders. According to Indian data, the vehicle kit for the Su-30MKI in the export version costs almost as much as a ready-made Su-30MKI when purchased ready-made from the Russian Federation... and for the Indians the Su-30MKI to assemble them costs twice as much. But they do this in order to develop competencies and “do it in India”.

I don’t think that the Indians on their own just suddenly ordered it.

Dealing with these gypsies is very difficult. Once every 5 years they come to our office to develop something for them. Chatting begins, and then they have elephant races, or something else. After 5 years everything repeats itself. Soon they will probably appear again, only to disappear for 5 years.

What Indian weapons? Of all the more or less worthwhile ones, only the Russian-Indian Brahmos make sense, but the aircraft need to be modernized for them, and the Indians are having trouble with their weapons. The fact that they have their own is many times worse than ours... In theory, it was possible to buy the MiG 27 for inexpensively. But we don’t have pilots for them...
In theory, you can buy civilian ships from the Indians, but then our shipyards will lose at least some income, because all warships, well, maybe except nuclear submarines, are built by shipyards at a loss...

Apparently the French "Rafale" in the "deck" version is the best option for India, and in terms of radar and electronic warfare, these devices are currently superior to the domestic SU-30... So, the French fighter uses an RBE2 radar with an active electronic scanning array (AESA), and on the Su-30s operated by India, a passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar. In the first case, one large emitter is used, and in the second, several small-sized radars are used. A platform using the AESA system is not only less likely to be detected due to its operation at multiple frequencies, but also has higher reliability, smaller size and weight. In addition, AESA-based radar is capable of operating in conditions of strong interference! In terms of its combat equipment, the Rafale is also noticeably superior to all existing fighters of the Indian Air Force. The Rafale is capable of carrying MICA air-to-air missiles (AAM), which can be used in both close-in combat and beyond visual range (BVR). In addition, Meteor and SCALP missiles can be installed on board the Rafale. The first is a 190-kg munition with a flight range of more than 100 km, capable of moving at a speed of Mach 4. In turn, SCALP (or Storm Shadow) is a long-range air-to-ground missile. Its range exceeds 300 kilometers. Rafale can be used to deliver nuclear weapons. However! The SU-30MKI - Rafale "combination" is a fairly balanced tactical "design" on the "battlefield"... Indians are complex and "heavy" buyers who know how to "twist their arms" and not "shak out" their wallet too much... But! The whole “flavor” of Russian-Indian deals, on weapons, Russia gives India the opportunity to use our technologies (partially related), “know-how”, which the USA, France, Sweden, Israel and other Europe do not provide.... What in India they understand and appreciate, despite the increased political pressure on the leadership of India and the corruption component in such processes....

      19 September 2023 10: 15
Well, is the Rafal better than the SU-30Mki, did you learn from French advertising?
About the fact that Rafales can carry an analogue of Storm Shadow, this is generally bullshit, Su-30Mkis can carry Brahmos, locally produced, which are better in everything and which, in fact, can be equipped with local nuclear weapons.
Another thing is that the Rafal is really good as a sea-based aircraft, because for a number of reasons we don’t have a modern version of the naval fighter, neither the SU nor the MiG...
The F/A 18 won’t suit them either, it’s for large aircraft carriers, no one will sell them the F-35 with short takeoff, and it’s expensive.
There are no other alternatives at all.
What is good about Rafal is that they have no division into sea and non-sea, that is, all fighters can be equally operated on a ship; in case of losses, the naval air wing can always be replenished with land ones, or assigned to the ship if another aircraft carrier is built. In this regard, of course, Rafales are really unique and more logical.
