“There are claims to the Malvinas Islands”: Argentina launched the modernization of medium tanks TAM 2C
The basis of the armored battle formations of the Argentine army is the TAM medium tank, developed by 1983 on the chassis of the German Marder infantry fighting vehicle and armed with a 105 mm L7A3 rifled cannon along with two 7,62 mm FN MAG machine guns. In total, until 1986, 256 pieces of equipment were produced, which were supplied only to the country's armed forces.
In 2022, it was announced its intention to upgrade this machine to the TAM 2C level. In the course of modernization, the tank should receive new hydraulics, an electric turret and gun drive, an auxiliary power unit, a round-the-clock optical system, the ability to fire missiles from the bore and optional KAZ from the Israeli company Elbit.
At the same time, it is required to prevent a significant excess of mass (the current weight is about 30 tons), since the soft soils of the pampas predominate in the Argentine theater of operations. In this regard, Argentina is armed with only medium (TAM, M-60A1) and light (SK-105 Kürassier, AMX-13, Patagón) Tanks.
To carry out the modernization, the production site of the Center for Strategic Research in the province of Mendoza (not working since 2018) was restored, which received the name Malvinas Argentinas, that is, the Argentine Malvins, whose ownership is disputed by Britain, calling them the Falkland Islands.
- said in the metallurgical company IMPSA on the occasion of the opening of production.
Malvinas Argentinas will manufacture and upgrade the towers and produce a range of parts, including fuel tanks and rollers.
