USMC V-22 Osprey tiltrotor with Marines on board crashes off the coast of Australia

The US Marine Corps lost another tiltrotor V-22 Osprey, the car crashed off the coast of Australia during the Predators Run military exercises. This is reported by the Australian press.

According to published data, a US Marine Corps tiltrotor crashed near Melville Island in northern Australia, 60 km from the city of Darwin. Twenty Marines were on board, no deaths have been reported yet, but rescue services said they were looking for several "missing" troops. Other details of the incident were not reported.

(...) during the exercise Predators Run 2023, an incident occurred with a military helicopter. (...) employees of the United States Department of Defense were injured during the incident. Australian military personnel are not involved in it

the Australian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It is noted that the fallen tiltrotor took part in the Predators Run exercises, where, in addition to the Americans, military personnel from East Timor, Indonesia and the Philippines participated.

It is worth noting that the accidents of the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor are not surprising, these rotorcraft have long been experiencing problems with the transmission, then with the gearbox, then with the clutch. Tiltroplanes crashed twice last year, once in Norway during an exercise, and the second time in the United States, killing five members of the US Army.

The US Marine Corps has repeatedly suspended V-22 Osprey flights due to technical issues, but has resumed them since the aircraft is the mainstay of the Marine Corps and there is currently nothing to replace it with.

The car is capricious, but the idea is interesting and promising, apparently the technology has not reached that level.

Clearly the technology hasn't reached that level.
Rather, it is not the technology, but the engineering thought that is a little behind. It is probably difficult to make the same engines work as a helicopter with the transition to airplane mode. But in American science fiction films and action movies, they are the main means of delivering special forces and they fly in dozens at a time.

I disagree, there are no obstacles to engineering thought, but there are technologies - the quality of materials is not adequate or is very complex (roads), etc.
Although not an engineer, I suspect that as soon as there is a qualitative breakthrough in batteries and the motors are electric, many problems will disappear by themselves.

So they actually fly in dozens. This is a long used machine. Since it was put into service in 2007, there have been less than 30 serious accidents. So no. Quite a normal machine, very actively exploited, including in the database zones

It is worth adding that this "masterpiece" aircraft, costing several times more than a similar helicopter, does not have autorotation, there is a tendency to the state of the Vortex Ring, hitting which leads to its death.

Only it flies much faster than helicopters and at much greater distances.
Therefore, they are switching to convertiplanes instead of landing helicopters.

You will be surprised! but according to the parameters that the Pentagon presented as part of 3 programs for promising helicopters. Only converter planes fit into them, well, turntables with a pusher propeller. So most likely the entire US army will gradually switch to them. hi

I watched the comments, it’s interesting that I just read in the news that the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were taken prisoner, there is a humane attitude towards them (medical care, food, water, smoke) from the soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation who are just fighting with them.
And here the couch troops, warm and in the hall, jump out of their pants for joy, where do you get so much acid from? It's good to be brave looking at your gadget's screen.

these rotorcraft have long been experiencing problems with the transmission, then with the gearbox, then with the clutch.

Why is there a clutch at all? The emnip thrust is adjusted by the pitch of the propeller at a constant speed.

It's not a very simple transmission. recourse
If one engine fails, the torque is distributed to both propellers from the good one. This is what a clutch is for. Yes

what Not an aviator, but I love cars and motorcycles. As I understand it, in aviation, especially with the tiltrotor 22nd Osprey, the "clutch" as a node for transmitting torque from the engine to the propeller is implemented in this way, its role is played by the gearbox for transmitting torque to the propeller:

"There are two gearboxes in the engine nacelle. One is designed to transmit power to the propeller, the other (installed along the axis of the nacelle turning unit) is to drive the synchronization shaft passing through the center section gearbox, on which alternating current generators are located. In emergency situations and during ground checks, the latter can be driven by an auxiliary power unit.During normal operation of the engines, each of them transmits its power through the gearbox to the corresponding propeller, part of which (about 380 kW) is diverted through the shaft to the generator drive gearbox. In the event of a failure of one of the engines, the power of the serviceable one automatically increases to 5100 kW.At the same time, the generated power is distributed as follows: about 3960 kW goes to drive propellers and up to 1100 kW - to drive generators and power supplies for aircraft systems. If both engines fail, the auxiliary power unit starts to function, which within 30 minutes can drive both propellers at 30% less than the nominal speed."

If those marines had surrendered to us, they would also have been treated humanely. And until that moment they are enemies and the attitude towards them is appropriate

The Ospreys had many disasters in their first 5 years of operation.
Now their accident rate does not exceed the helicopter.
Whole squadrons of Osprey made intercontinental flights (in air refueling) at aircraft speed.

Nevertheless, a complex machine, on the verge of the possibilities of available materials. As a result, it does not have a proper margin of safety and is extremely demanding on the quality of service and training of the flight crew.

Anyone who read the Foreign Military Review in 1983 will remember that the aircraft had a very difficult time getting into serial production.
