IL-114 against the updated IL-114-300: what has changed

In 2016, the government of the Russian Federation decided to resume production of the Il-114. Initially, this initiative caused quite a lot of controversy. After all, in fact, the “resumption of production” meant its deployment from scratch.

In addition, a plane from the 90s is completely uncompetitive in our time. Consequently, he had to undergo a deep modernization, which, according to many experts, is tantamount to the creation of a new winged vehicle.

Meanwhile, having calculated the economic components, the designers came to the conclusion that it is still more profitable to use the Il-114 as the basis for the updated airliner, rather than develop a new aircraft. So, the Il-114-300 project was born.

To test the technologies with which it is planned to create an updated serial short-haul airliner, one of the Il-114s that is being mothballed was used. The first prototype took to the skies for the first time in 2020.

It is worth noting that outwardly nothing has changed in the IL-114-300. The length of the aircraft is 26,9 meters, the height is 9,2 meters, and the wingspan is 30 meters. The wing, by the way, was left as large, but the transverse “V” was increased to 7 degrees.

The landing gear of the liner is quite squat to save work on unpaved strips. The power plant is located in large engine nacelles integrated into the wing from above and strongly pushed forward.

The TV7-117ST-01 unit itself received a new electronic control system, an optimized component base, became lighter and increased its power to 2800 hp. on takeoff with a maximum of 3100 hp, which is about 12-14% more than the base version. The resource indicators increased to 7-8 thousand hours, which is 10 times more than that of the engine used on the IL-114.

Modernization also touched the screws. On the Il-114-300, six-blade saber-shaped AB112-114 were installed. Compared to their predecessors, they are quieter, lighter and more durable.

The cruising speed of the updated liner remained the same - about 500 km / h with a practical ceiling of 7,6 km. However, a more powerful engine and improved mechanization provide greater takeoff acceleration. In addition, at a lower minimum flight speed, it also slows down faster. As a result, the Il-114-300 takes about 750 meters to take off, and 550 meters to run.

The mass of the structure was reduced by a ton, but this also gave a result. Taking into account the possibility of increasing the fuel supply, the flight range has now increased to 1400 km. For IL-114, this figure was - 1 thousand km.

According to the developer, the obsolete Soviet avionics will be completely replaced in the cockpit. True, given the impossibility of installing a foreign one, Russian designers are working on a domestic one at an accelerated pace.

In general, the IL-114-300 turned out to be a completely compromise aircraft, in which, on the one hand, there is nothing extraordinary, on the other hand, it is not inferior to its niche colleagues and will remain relevant for a long time to come.

The flight of the second and third prototypes of the promising aircraft is expected soon. Meanwhile, orders from domestic airlines are already being received for the new liner.

The aircraft is included in a comprehensive program for the development of the aviation industry - by 2030, 70 Il-114-300s should be built, and the first two are planned to be handed over to the customer (a single Far Eastern airline) in 2024.
70 in 6 years. plane per month. Yes, the pace is not impressive.
As for the TV7-117ST-01 engines, six units are expected to be manufactured this year, eight in 2024, then sixteen, and from 2026 at the UEC-Klimov enterprise in St. Petersburg, 26 power plants should be produced annually .

So it seems that the IL-112 had the same engines and it seems like the reason for the fall was due to fire .... who will clarify.

        For IL 112 engine TV7-117ST.
        TV7-117ST-01 for IL 114.
To finance the development of the TV7-117ST-01 engine, budget investments in the amount of 158,22 million rubles are allocated, which will be used for flight design tests and maintenance of power plants in 2024 as part of the Il-114-300 aircraft

Both aircraft were supposed to have the same TV7-117st-01 engines. About 2 and 3 copies of the IL-114 did not hear anything for a couple of years after the IL-112v disaster. Probably the engines were modified. They wrote about a possible overheating of the oil. Perhaps they installed other radiators, maybe they corrected the work of the software - After all, a passenger aircraft needs slightly different modes than a military one. In short, there is an option that they decided to optimize the engine for a civilian board, and then somehow decide with the IL-112v. They wrote that they could even put a pd8 on him, because the military wants him to be able to take off on one engine.

On the IL-112 there is a more forced version of the same TV7-117ST (I can’t say whether 3600 mares were squeezed out of it by iron doping - which is worse - or just software). However, the emergency mode is still an emergency mode, and nominally the engines are the same (3100 hp take-off and 2800 continuous mode with the dimension of the original motor under 2500 hp).
That is, it can be expected that the time since the crash of the IL-112 was spent on finalizing the main modification (for 2800 mares), scoring on the overpowered version for the IL-112. I won’t even be surprised if the engines for production vehicles will be with a power limit (i.e., we will forget about the power of 3100 on takeoff, as, perhaps, about 2800 on the cruiser. With a corresponding deterioration in the VPH and, possibly, a decrease in cruising speed or commercial loads).

They are guided by firm orders, and airlines, apparently, are being cautious. It is understandable: the price tag is high, it is not clear how it will behave, the market is relatively small.

      plane per month.

Does anyone believe in this? The deadlines will be shifted to the right under the pretext of sanctions, they will ask for money for modernization, and they will forget ... And I will not slander, it just happened more than once, unfortunately

Naturally, there will be no "aircraft per month." As in any complex (especially high-tech) production - at the beginning of production there will be "an aircraft in half a year", but in 5-10 years - "two aircraft per month" (although here the task is quite a strategic one - so at "full power" can come out in 4-6 years). Stupidly due to the fact that the personnel for its assembly must first be trained, and then also let them gain experience (and this is not office plankton for you - here you need much more knowledge and skills)

And after all, they really want to put the engine from the IL-112. I made a mistake last time, I confused it with TV7-117SM, which has 2650 takeoff power and was certified for the Il-114 in 2002. It would seem that there is a good motor, but it was necessary to force it a little more, and then row it.

Decisions on the "return" of the 114th were made in 2014 somewhere,
and then .. "suddenly" in 2017-2018. sailed "Ladoga" from UZGA (UMMC),
which at the beginning with the purchase of part of the L-410 technologies "entered" the industry.

Although Ladoga will take fewer passengers, it is even better for a regional turboprop.
Our population (as elsewhere) is urbanizing, so it is better to include in the forecast for the Far East and the North a board with lower characteristics. And here “Ladoga” wins, in my opinion.
On routes in the central part of the country, 114 may be more interesting, but not everywhere either.

Given that Ladoga is being made by a private owner (UMMC), with a very effective and consistent management, the intrigue with the future of the IL-114 remains. There is a possibility that the IL-114 will "hang" between the Superjet and Ladoga, without opening a wide market niche.

Moreover, the pace of movement of "Ladoga" as a private project is much higher.
In what "Ladoga" can lose in the first years - in "children's sores".

And it is obvious that the IL-114 in this case can be interesting for the VTA. It's time to withdraw part of not only the An-30, An-24/26, but also the An-140, which for some reason before 2014 were gathered into the VTA.

Well, 114-300 can use MO, and there orders from 5 sides to ...

Ladoga works in a slightly different niche. And it is much more expensive (if you consider not the price of the car, but the cost of transportation).
If it’s very rude, then the IL-114 is a replacement for the SSZ on directions where the SSZ does not have sufficient passenger traffic, the distance is too short (or the runway is corny too short for the SSZ). While Ladoga is a plane for routes where at one end there is an airport (it is possible that with a runway that is a bit short for the SSZh), and at the other there is a landing site (and it’s good if it’s with an artificial, not a dirt runway), but with This passenger traffic is stable and large enough.

Dear author, what do you mean by that? Is it possible to elaborate on the alleged competitors? TTX is not needed, enough names.

He means that on the 90s projects there are no USB connectors near the seats. Which, of course, makes the project completely uncompetitive.

Considering that Ladoga is being made by a private owner (UMMC), with a very effective and consistent leadership,

Here you need to consider what is behind this effective private trader. There is a high probability that this comrade can be moved, and here it will turn out how effective private traders are. So it's not all that simple. No one has canceled the administrative resource yet.

I agree, but so far UMMC is on horseback. In Magadan, they bought out Susumanzoloto, a company that was in the top ten in terms of gold mining in the Russian Federation. Now on the agenda is the purchase of the assets of Polymetal, which is fleeing to Kazakhstan. No matter how ... very revealing episodes in relation to the company and the state.

Well, the UMMC uses the "administrative resource" you mentioned at 146%. Like Elon Musk with his space programs.
