Representative of the ruling party of Turkey: Sweden only opened the way to NATO membership, but did not approve of its entry into the alliance
Turkey has not yet expressed its unequivocal support for Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. The official representative of the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party, Omer Celik, spoke about the situation with the entry of Stockholm into the alliance on the air of the Habertürk TV channel.
As the Turkish politician noted, the Turkish parliament will consider the protocol on Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance only in the fall, during the session starting on October 1, 2023.
- said the representative of the ruling party of Turkey.
Earlier, Ankara and Stockholm signed an agreement in Vilnius, according to which Sweden will fight against organizations that are considered in Turkey as threatening national security, and will also support Turkey's entry into the European Union. In response, Türkiye will refuse to block Sweden's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.
Now Turkey is preventing Sweden from joining the alliance, referring primarily to the close ties between Stockholm and the Kurdish national organizations. Recall that Sweden began to cooperate with Turkish and Syrian Kurds back in the eighties of the twentieth century.
Now the country is home to a large and quite influential Kurdish diaspora, whose political representatives are associated with the Swedish left. The Turkish leadership does not like this situation very much, demanding that Sweden extradite the Kurdish radicals wanted by Ankara.
