Germany to build three new Project 424 reconnaissance ships for its own fleet
The German fleet will still receive reconnaissance ships, the contract for the construction of a series of new reconnaissance ships of project 424 (FDB424 - Flottendienstboote Klasse 424) was received by the shipbuilding company NVL Group, which is a military division of Lürssen Werft.
On July 8 this year, the NVL Group and the German Federal Defense Purchasing Authority signed an amended agreement for the construction of three project 424 reconnaissance ships for the German fleet. It is planned that the new ships will replace three obsolete Project 423 reconnaissance ships (of the Oste type) built in the 80s of the last century in the German Navy.
In general, the program for replacing old reconnaissance ships was launched back in 2018, and by 2021 Lürssen Werf received a contract for the construction of three new generation ships under project 424 with the transfer of the lead ship to the fleet in 2027. The German government allocated 2,1 billion euros for the entire series. However, work stopped due to the impossibility of normal ship design, as the German Ministry of Defense constantly demanded changes to it, putting forward new requirements.
As a result, the project had to be redone, as it became too different from the base one. In addition, the construction program has risen in price, and significantly. After lengthy consultations, the Bundestag approved the revision of the program, allocating 3,26 billion euros for its implementation, and the NVL Group received a revised contract.
Now the company will build ships according to the modified project 424, the characteristics of which are not disclosed. To date, only the length of future reconnaissance ships is known - 132 meters. The lead ship should be ready in 2029, the first and second production ships - in 2030 and 2031, respectively. In addition, the company will build a ground complex for information processing and personnel training. It will be the first to enter service in 2027.
