Russia continues to develop space engines, the first oxygen-methane engine RD-0177 will appear by the end of this year. This was stated by the director of JSC "Design Bureau of Chemical Automation" Sergey Kovalev.
The new engine with a thrust of 100 tons is designed for the promising Amur-SPG launch vehicle with a returnable first stage. In metal, an oxygen-methane engine will appear at the end of 2023, then fire tests will follow, the developers plan to complete the work in 2025.
Today we are creating a fundamentally new engine with a thrust of 100 tons. This is our new development. The first engine should appear at the end of this year, then go through a cycle of fire tests. All work should be completed by the end of 2025
- said Kovalev.
In 2020, Roscosmos announced a competition for the creation of a two-stage medium-class rocket "Amur" with a returnable first stage, equipped with an engine running on oxygen and liquefied natural gas (methane). It is assumed that the rocket will be used from the Vostochny cosmodrome and launch 9,5 tons into low Earth orbit with the reusable use of the first stage and 12 tons - with a single use; steps. As previously stated in Roskosmos, it will be possible to use the first stage at least 2,5 times.
The Amur-LNG rocket is being developed by the RCC Progress under a contract signed with Roscosmos. The technical design, which started in 2022, should be completed in 2024.
