Chinese destroyer tries to intercept US warship in Taiwan Strait
The Pentagon is outraged by the actions of a Chinese destroyer that tried to "intercept" a US Navy ship en route through the Taiwan Strait. According to Global News, the Chinese literally passed "in front of the nose" of the Americans.
The Americans "miraculously" managed to avoid a collision with a Chinese ship that had crossed the path of a US Navy destroyer sailing through the Taiwan Strait. According to the Canadian publication, the American destroyer Chung-Hoon and the Canadian frigate Montreal followed the strait, which China considers its territorial waters. During the movement, a Chinese warship, most likely a Project 052D destroyer, came out to intercept them, demanding to change course.
The American warship refused to change course, demanding that the Chinese "stay clear", but the PLA Navy destroyer cut across the American, forcing it to change course and slow down to avoid a collision. Reportedly, the Chinese ship passed in front of the American at a distance of no more than 150 yards (137 meters). The Americans are outraged by the actions of the Chinese ship, most likely, Beijing will receive a note of protest in the near future. As the Pentagon has repeatedly stated, for the American fleet there are no "no-go zones", Washington stands for "free navigation".
China considers the Taiwan Strait as its territorial waters, since Taiwan is one of the provinces of China. The USA has a different opinion, they believe that the waters of the strait are neutral, therefore they are available for navigation. In addition, Washington believes that Taiwan is an independent and sovereign state, so they provide it with all kinds of support, including military assistance.
Recall that quite recently a Chinese J-16 fighter jet passed literally in front of the US Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, forcing the American crew to "worry".
