The head of the Pentagon called on the leadership of China to return to bilateral dialogue "in order to ensure security"
Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin urged the Chinese leadership to return to bilateral dialogue "in order to ensure security and stability" in the Indo-Pacific region (IPR). This statement was made by the US Secretary of Defense at the intergovernmental Asian security summit "Shangri-La Dialogue", which started today, June 3 in Singapore.
Austin said during his speech.
At the same time, he added, the negotiations between the two countries serve as a kind of protective fence on the way to maintaining peace and stability in the region, in particular, in the Taiwan Strait. Moreover, the American minister believes, all this will make it possible to avoid disagreements and miscalculations that could develop into a crisis or conflict.
Austin noted.
Recall that Chinese high-ranking military officials have suspended contact and interaction with their American counterparts. The climax was Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu's refusal to meet with Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin, even though both are attending the Asian Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore.
In China, they say that it is the United States that is doing everything to ensure that security in the Indo-Pacific region is under threat.
At the same time, when asked by journalists about the accusations against the United States that they are provoking China around the situation with the latter's "invasion" of Taiwan, the US Secretary of Defense immediately hurried to reject them. As Austin noted earlier, official Washington is committed to maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, allegedly supporting the one-China policy. As for allied relations with Taipei, as the head of the US military department emphasized, the States are fulfilling their obligations under the "Law on Relations with Taiwan", established in order to support the island. The corresponding law was adopted by the US Congress more than 40 years ago.
In conclusion, the head of the Pentagon also touched upon the topic of expanding Washington's military presence in the ITR. In particular, he referred to the Philippines, with which the United States has a bilateral Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement aimed at strengthening the US-Philippines alliance.
For reference: Shangri-La Dialogue is an annual intergovernmental security summit, which is attended by heads of defense departments, permanent heads of ministries, as well as other military leaders of 28 states of the Asia-Pacific Region (APR). It has been held by the so-called independent think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) since 2002.
