Indonesian Defense Minister proposes to create a demilitarized zone with UN peacekeepers in the territories of the Ukrainian armed conflict
The Indonesian Ministry of Defense offers its own version of the settlement of the armed conflict in Ukraine. The proposal was made by the Minister of Defense of this country of Southeast Asia, Prabowo Subianto.
According to the Indonesian minister, it is necessary to make a decision on the creation of a demilitarized zone in the territories where the armed conflict is unfolding. Subianto also takes the initiative to deploy UN peacekeepers in these territories.
In Indonesia itself, various political forces positively perceive the proposal of the head of the country's military department. At the same time, Subianto's statements are also pre-election in nature. The fact is that he is the general secretary of the national conservative party Gerindra (“Movement for Great Indonesia”), which he created in 2008, and at the same time one of the candidates for the presidency.
Indonesian presidential elections will be held in February 2024. Prabowo Subianto participated in the previous elections - 2019. Then he took second place, losing with a score of about 44,5% to the leader of the presidential race, Joko Widodo.
Experts, commenting on Subianto's proposal to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, say that on the one hand it deserves consideration, and on the other hand, given the length of the contact line, tens of thousands of peacekeepers may be needed to control the demilitarized zone, which is a problem in itself.
