Indian edition: The authorities of Russia and India are discussing the prospects for the development of the Northern Sea Shipping Route

Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East Region and the Arctic Alexei Chekunkov arrived in India on an official visit.

According to the Indian edition of WION, during a meeting with Indian officials, plans were discussed regarding the creation of an infrastructure designed to ensure the reliable and safe transportation of goods through the shortest sea route connecting East Asia and Europe.

It is reported that this step implies the construction of the necessary processing facilities. One of the key issues during negotiations with Indian officials was the issue of "reliable and safe" transportation of goods through the Northern Sea Shipping Route, using Russian and Indian ports for this.

Previously, the Indian authorities have not come out with an unequivocal condemnation of Russia's special operation in Ukraine. Last year, India became the largest buyer of Russian oil after China.

The Northern Sea Route is the shortest route connecting East Asia and Europe. Russia is striving to own the largest shipping route, investing heavily in the creation of an appropriate infrastructure.

At present, the Northern Sea Route is unsuitable for use due to a thick layer of ice covering it, however, due to the warming in the Arctic region, Moscow plans to begin year-round use of this route in the near future.

And why not. The EU countries are working on a ban on the purchase of our LNG from Novatek. The funny thing is that the beginning of the Novotek project meant exporting LNG to Southeast Asia and not to any Europe. Europe was Gazprom's ham. So Mikhelson will return to the original plan. Europe paid for the development Novatek project. Many human thanks to her for this.

up to 75% of contractual obligations for the supply of LNG up to 22 years were really tied to China, part of the gas was presented as "democratic" Amer gas (shoulder from Sabetta to Europe) will be smaller. As now with obligations, the general public will no longer know

Novotek LNG with ice-class tankers ARC
7 will deliver LNG to the terminal in Kamchatka, and from there the Indians will drag it to their India. Novatek in the South Caucasus has already riveted an LNG storage barge and is dragging it to Murmansk. Think if Europe refuses LNG, Mikhelson will send it to Kamchatka. that two barges were ordered.

Yeah, they will think, calculate, and ask, what for do we need this? Do you think that Novotek will be able to deceive them? Indians studied in our techie, although they are slow-witted, they are diligent.

They have been talking about the development of the Northern Sea Route for more than 10 years, but the traffic flow there is still meager compared to the sea route through the Mediterranean Sea. The icebreaking fleet needs a very large one in order to carry out continuous escort of ships.

The phrase about the shortest sea route from Asia to Europe ... is somewhat sly. It is the shortest for goods from China to Scandinavia and England. Can be used for shipping to France. But for delivery to Southern Europe, it is not viable and loses to the Suez Canal. Therefore, it is not entirely clear how the Northern Route can be of interest to India.

Perhaps the northern sea route is also important because
that the throughput of the Suez Canal is only 50 ships per day.
And extra days of chartering a ship are expensive.

Increasing the capacity of the Suez Canal is one of the most "simple" actions (compared to the problems of the NSR). And work in this direction is being carried out.

The administration of the Suez Canal will expand and deepen the southern part of the water corridor in two years. The decision was made after the incident with the Ever Given container ship. The plan to expand the canal has already been approved by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, said Ussam Rabia, head of the Suez Canal administration. It is planned to expand the 30 km section of the canal between the Gorky Lakes and the city of Suez by 40 km to the east. Also, the site will be deepened by 8 feet or 2,5 meters. In addition, they are going to extend the second line of the canal to the north of the Gorky Lakes by 10 km. The total length will be 82 km.

The last time a large-scale reconstruction of the Suez Canal was carried out in 2014-2015. Then the cost of the work amounted to $8,2 billion. As part of the project, a new branch of the Suez Canal with a length of 35 km was built, located between the 60th and 95th km of the canal. After completion of the work, two-way traffic became possible for 115,5 km, that is, for 60% of the length of the canal.

Currently, new nuclear icebreakers of project 22220 Arktika, Sibir and Ural are being built, which will be able to overcome up to 3 meters of ice.
The Russian icebreaking fleet consists of about 30 diesel-powered icebreakers, 4 nuclear-powered icebreakers and the Sevmorput lighter carrier, the largest and the only nuclear-powered cargo ship to date.
Lighter carrier "Sevmorput" is a Soviet icebreaking transport vessel (container ship) with a nuclear power plant of the KLT-40 type. It is the largest of only four nuclear-powered non-military merchant ships ever built, and the largest lighter carrier by displacement. It is named after the Northern Sea Route, for which it was built. It is the only vessel of project 10081.

The main characteristics of the lighter carrier "Sevmorput":

    Displacement: 61,88 thousand tons
    Length: 260,1 m
    Width: 32,2 m
    Height: 18,3 m (board height)
    Draft: 11,8 m
Engines: nuclear turbine GTZA 684 OM5
    Power: 29420 kW (39436 hp)
Propeller: 1 variable pitch propeller with 4 blades
    Travel speed: 20,8 max. nodes
Registered tonnage: 74 LASH type lighters or 1336 20-foot containers.

The Sevmorput lighter carrier was built in Kerch at the Zaliv shipyard. Laid down on November 2, 1984, launched on February 20, 1986. Entered service on December 31, 1988. The vessel is designed to transport cargo in lighters and containers to remote northern regions. Able to navigate independently in ice up to 1 m thick

Well, it doesn’t get warmer, but in the 80s I went in the winter only with a fur coat, felt boots, a hat, but it was cold in Altai. Since 2000, I’ve been going in the winter in an autumn demisison, sneakers, and a light hat, rarely when a couple of times a month the temperature in winter goes below minus 15, usually it’s up to 10 frost or even rain in winter in January. Somewhere in other parts of the world, I admit that the frosts have only intensified

The Arktika icebreaker is the lead ship of Project 22220. It was laid down in 2013 and launched in 2016. In 2020, it successfully passed sea trials and was handed over to the customer - FSUE Atomflot
According to the Federal State Budgetary Institution GlavSevmorput (part of the state corporation Rosatom), in 2021, more than 32 million tons of cargo were transported along the Northern Sea Route, which exceeded the 2022 target of the federal project "Development of the Northern Sea Route". During the summer-autumn navigation period from July 1 to November 30, 2021, FSUE Atomflot (part of Rosatom State Corporation) carried out 100 icebreaking assistance. 30 ships passed without icebreaking assistance during the information support of the Federal State Budgetary Institution GlavSevmorput.
In recent years, there has been an increase in the volume of traffic along the Northern Sea Route, especially in the framework of oil and gas projects on the Arctic shelf.

There is a strong gesheft to the country, because it is safer, closer, there are no annoying striped fighters with trade on aircraft carriers, and it is cheaper in terms of fuel. It’s cold, though, not all ships will fit, but if transshipment to our ice ships is organized somewhere, then sweetie comes out.

The distance from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok along the Northern Sea Route is over 14 thousand km (through the Suez Canal - over 23 thousand km). Travel speed: 20,8 max. knots, how long will it take the ship to cover this distance?.
    time = distance / speed.
In this case, the distance is 14 thousand km, and the speed is 20,8 knots.
    1 knot is equal to 1,852 km/h.
    speed = 20,8 * 1,852 = 38,5 km/h
time = 14000 / 38,5 = 363,6 hours - this means that the ship will cover the distance from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok along the Northern Sea Route in about 363,6 hours or 15 days and 3 hours.

20 knots is clear water, I went all the way in the Igarka in 1983, we went from St. Petersburg to Pevek and then they handed over the ship in the find, ice began in the Kara and ended only in Chukchi, we ourselves could go in ice up to a meter, then Lenin led then the arctic was leading, I don’t know what the ice situation is like there in the summer, but I think even ice-class ships cannot pass without an icebreaker

In March 2023, Russia and India discussed the possibility of creating an alternative route for the delivery of goods from India to Europe along the eastern route through the Northern Sea Route, using both Russian and Indian port facilities. According to the Russian Ministry for the Development of the Far East, the cost of shipping a container from Vladivostok to India is one third lower than the cost of shipping a container from Moscow. Promising areas of cooperation include the creation of a Russian-Indian trans-Arctic container line, the construction of processing facilities near the Northern Sea Route and the expansion of the fleet.

In September 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India would assist Russia in developing the Northern Sea Route and turning it into an international trade artery. He also noted that India is interested in participating in projects for the development of Arctic resources and the development of infrastructure in the Far North of Russia.

Mordvin 3 (Vladimir), respected, the Syradasayskoye coal deposit in Taimyr is one of the most dynamically developed by Roman Trotsenko's "Northern Star" company from AEON. The port is being built approximately 90 km south of Dixon. An enrichment plant is also being built. Since the repeatedly, not once, systematically beloved USC has not built a single ice-class bulk tanker in all the years of its existence, options for loading enriched coal into standard sea containers with transportation to Kamchatka on the Northern Sea Route are being considered.
