European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen could be the next NATO Secretary General
Discussions are beginning in Europe over who will replace Jens Stoltenberg as NATO Secretary General after he leaves office at the end of this year.
The British edition of The Sun calls one of the likely candidates for this position the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, whose powers as head of the European Commission expire next year.
According to the newspaper, a number of members of the alliance came out in support of von der Leyen, but it is obvious that London will be against her candidacy, since the UK wants to see its Defense Minister Ben Wallace as NATO Secretary General.
The Sun notes that the head of the European Commission will have a tough fight in the non-transparent selection process. There are no official elections, but a new general secretary is chosen based on consensus among the members of the alliance.
At the same time, the United States, as a rule, does not nominate a candidate, since the American general traditionally performs the functions of the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, the newspaper writes. However, it is clear that it is Washington that will decide who will lead NATO.
In addition to the two mentioned candidates for the post of NATO Secretary General, The Sun also names Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Canadian Minister Christia Freeland, and ex-British Prime Minister Johnson as possible contenders. With a lesser degree of probability, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, the ex-president of Croatia, can become Stoltenberg's successor. She simply has several orders of magnitude less anti-Russian statements. Although she is also among the candidates.
