The Kremlin called the call to expel all Russian journalists from the United States absurd
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the proposal made after the arrest on suspicion of espionage of a correspondent of the American edition of the Wall Street Journal, suggesting the expulsion of all Russian journalists in the United States, sounded absurd.
The head of the Kremlin's press service stressed that all foreign journalists with valid accreditation in the Russian Federation are in no way limited in their activities in the country. Representatives of the press, including foreign ones, are not subject to any restrictions and obstacles regarding the free performance of their work.
According to Peskov, in the case of Gershkovich, the case concerns the implementation of essentially espionage activities under the guise of performing journalistic duties in the framework of cooperation with a Western publication. However, the incident with Gershkovich is not a reason to expel all Russian journalists from the United States.
The Kremlin spokesman also added that in the absence of any identified violations or going beyond the framework provided for by the current legislation, such a step would be absurd and wrong.
Earlier, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow chose the correspondent of the American edition of The Wall Street Journal, Evan Gershkovich, who was detained in a case of espionage, a measure of restraint in the form of detention for two months. Due to the fact that the case file contains state secrets, the meeting was held behind closed doors.
