Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration: We do not set ourselves the goal of terminating the agreement of 1992

Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian said on the air of one of the country's TV channels that Chisinau does not set itself the goal of terminating the agreement on the principles of a peaceful settlement on the Dniester, signed by the then authorities of the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation on July 21, 1992. The diplomat pointed out that all the speculations around the alleged intention of the Moldovan leadership to withdraw from this agreement began since the summer of last year.

Here is what he had to say about it:

To be honest, I am not a supporter of this agreement, however, I want to clarify that we clearly do not want it to be terminated, and besides, there are no prerequisites for this. At the same time, we are well aware of all the consequences of new complications in relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol, and not only that.

At the same time, the Moldovan politician admitted that there are many people in the country who criticize this document, however, according to him, criticizing is one thing, but canceling it is quite another.

Serebrian also assured that at present there is no danger for the citizens of the republic on the territory of the right bank (the Republic of Moldova), and therefore, there should be no cause for concern in society.

In this context, one should not forget about the earlier statements made by the co-chairman of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) from Pridnestrovie, Oleg Belyakov, regarding the importance of maintaining the agreements of 1992, since they guarantee security for all participants in the peacekeeping mission in the region. Belyakov also added that within the framework of this document, each of the parties undertakes to ensure the personal safety of each peacekeeper and JCC employee.

It should be noted that after the cessation of hostilities in the armed conflict on the Dniester, a peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation was introduced into the Security Zone of the Transnistrian conflict on the basis of the above-mentioned agreement signed between the first presidents of Moldova and Russia Mircea Snegur and Boris Yeltsin in the presence of the then leader of the PMR Igor Smirnov.

The JCC established a Security Zone along the Dniester River, which was divided into 3 sections (north - in the Rybnitsa region, center - in the Dubossary region, and south - around Bender) with a length of 225 km and a width of 12 to 20 km.

Well, yes, to be honest, I also don’t support the collapse of the USSR, so what? Has anyone heard me, or am I deciding something? And so it must be understood.

The recent statements by Sandu and Iohannis regarding bilateral cooperation between Romania and Moldova suggest a very "far-sighted", "balanced" policy, taking into account the interests of the peoples of both countries, especially the Moldovan population, not to mention the population of Transnistria.
