Turkish parliament ratifies agreement on Finland's accession to NATO
The General Assembly (Parliament) of Turkey ratified the treaty on Finland's accession to NATO. Thus, the last barrier to entry into the North Atlantic Alliance has been removed for Helsinki.
Recall that a few days earlier Finland's entry into the Western military bloc was approved by the Hungarian Parliament. And at the same time in Budapest they said that Turkey would do the same in the near future. In the end, that's exactly what happened.
Turkey was the last member of NATO, which did not formally agree to join the Finnish bloc. Now Finland will be admitted to NATO.
Initially, the Finns applied for membership together with the Swedes. Moreover, it was said that they were also going to join NATO exclusively together. However, then a series of political disagreements began, and the same Turkey stated that Stockholm was not fulfilling its obligations "to combat terrorism." Ankara was not satisfied with the fact that Sweden did not extradite her the leaders of the Kurdistan Workers' Party who are in this country.
The development of the situation suggests that Erdogan nevertheless decided to support the Finnish application in order to "not have any special problems before the elections."
Presidential elections in Turkey are scheduled for May 14, and Erdogan's victory is definitely not guaranteed. The approval of the Finnish application by Ankara can be considered Erdogan's kind of nod to the West, so that it does not put obstacles on the way of the current head of Turkey to a new presidential term. But in any case, the West is not going to stake on Erdogan, considering him an extremely inconvenient person for his policy.
