FSB detains American correspondent on suspicion of espionage
The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, a US citizen, was detained by operatives of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Russian Federation. This is reported by a number of media outlets.
As it became known, Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg. He is suspected of carrying out intelligence activities on the territory of the Russian Federation. The FSB reports that the man was collecting information about one of the enterprises of the military-industrial complex of the region.
There is no information yet whether Gershkovich is a career American intelligence officer or whether he collaborated with the US intelligence services on a temporary basis. But if the confidence of the investigation in his guilt is confirmed, he can be convicted under the article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Espionage”. However, often detained spies are exchanged sooner or later.
It can be assumed that Gershkovich is far from the only American citizen involved in the collection of intelligence data on the territory of the Russian Federation. Despite the deterioration of relations between Russia and the United States after the start of a special military operation, a large number of US citizens are still on Russian territory - these are both diplomats and journalists, entrepreneurs, religious figures, individuals who come to Russia as business travelers or tourists.
There is no doubt that every such foreign citizen from an unfriendly country should be under the close supervision of the special services during his stay on the territory of the Russian Federation.
