Switzerland approves decommissioning of 25 Leopard 2A4 tanks for possible resale to Germany
Germany may receive from Switzerland a number of decommissioned tanks Leopard 2, in Bern they decided to decommission 25 Pz-87 MBTs (licensed Leopard 2A4). This was reported by the authorities of the country.
The Swiss parliament has taken the first step in a situation that could lead to the sale of a number of Leopard 2 tanks to Germany in the future. The Commission on Security Policy of the Swiss National Council approved the decommissioning of 25 tanks. The decision to resell will be taken separately and no one can guarantee that it will be taken.
- says the website of the Parliament.
At the beginning of March of this year, the German Ministry of Defense sent a letter to Switzerland asking to sell decommissioned and stored Leopard 2A4 tanks, produced in Swiss factories under license. To date, the Swiss have 96 tanks, actually decommissioned, but according to the papers still listed in the army.
The Germans wanted to buy them all, after which the Rheinmetall concern would restore them and they entered service with the Bundeswehr, thereby closing the gaps that arose after the delivery of tanks to Ukraine. At the same time, they swore in Berlin that Swiss tanks would not be handed over to Kyiv in any way.
The decision on a possible resale should be made by the Swiss Parliament, the procedure is not simple, but in Berlin they hope that they will still receive a certain number of tanks. True, the Czech Republic also claims these tanks, the Czechs also requested the resale of the Swiss Leopard 2A4.
