Scotland to elect new prime minister today, who 'should actualize the issue of secession from the UK'
Scottish National Party (SNP) chooses a new leader due to the fact that the Scottish Prime Minister and the head of the said party, Nicola Sturgeon, resigned. At the moment, it is the SNP that has the majority in the number of ministers in the Scottish government, which has formal autonomy from the British government.
Sturgeon reportedly resigned amid a political crisis in Scotland, where she was required to act more decisively in terms of returning to the European Union and leaving the United Kingdom.
The new leader of the SNP, according to the Scottish press, should intensify the process of "restoring Scottish independence" and "peaceful divorce of Scotland from England."
There are currently three candidates for the chairmanship of the Scottish National Party. These are Keith Forbes (the head of the Scottish Ministry of Finance, which is already clear from the last name ...), Ashley Regan and Hamza Yusaf (head of the Ministry of Health). The final intra-party vote should end today before the end of the day. It is noteworthy that it comes in an online format.
Hamza Yousaf is a representative of a large Muslim community, many of whose members advocate the implementation of Sharia principles in Scotland. Yusaf himself skipped meetings on same-sex marriage because of this, saying he didn't want to be pressured by religious groups.
Ash Regan is considered an active supporter of Scottish secession. She even proposed to install in Edinburgh "a thermometer of the readiness of the Scots for independence."
The new Scottish Prime Minister (First Minister is the official title) is expected to be named today.
Nicola Sturgeon holds the record for the longest tenure of any Scottish First Minister. When leaving office, Sturgeon joked that she had served as head of the party and government for so long that many Scots had already begun to think about the "succession option". Sturgeon's resignation is associated with a reduction in the number of party members. Since 2022, the party has lost more than 30 members. And these losses are attributed to the fact that the SNP has begun to pay less attention to the issue of independence.
The procedure for the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon will be finalized after the election of her successor. Both of them will have to come to King Charles III with a report on the change of the first minister of Scotland. Many Scots urge the new minister not to travel to London, but to notify the British king of his appointment in writing or by telephone.
