The Japanese authorities have shown interest in the further development of oil and gas fields on Sakhalin
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, speaking today in Parliament, said that the country has shown interest in the further development of oil and gas fields in Sakhalin. The head of the Japanese Cabinet linked the country's readiness to maintain participation in projects not only with the very likely demand for LNG in the world market in the future, but also with the importance of ensuring its own energy security.
- said the Japanese prime minister.
It should be noted that Russia has decided to transfer two projects, Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2, to Russian jurisdiction. In this regard, foreign partners were offered to notify Moscow within 30 days of their consent to take ownership of shares in new companies. As a result, Tokyo agreed to further participation in both projects, despite the need to register a business in Russia. Moscow did not have any objections to this.
The Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project is a joint project of energy companies from Great Britain (Royal Dutch Shell), Japan (Mitsui) and Russia (Gazprom), which began operations in 2009. It provides Japan with LNG by 9%, and the Japanese side uses all this fuel to generate electricity.
Incidentally, Brussels and Washington met Tokyo here by temporarily lifting restrictions on the price ceiling that has been in effect for Russian hydrocarbons since December last year. That is, the purchase of LNG by Japan from Russia through companies registered in Russian jurisdiction will be carried out at a market price.
