During the NATO operation in Yugoslavia, NATO military personnel operating in Kosovo took precautions when using depleted uranium projectiles. The servicemen were forbidden to touch the equipment lined with such ammunition.
This was reported in the Italian newspaper il Fatto Quotidiano.
Journalists from Italy said that the inspection of the destroyed Yugoslav equipment was carried out exclusively in special protective equipment. Also, the military personnel of the NATO contingent were forbidden to use water in the area where shells with depleted uranium were used.
Earlier it was reported about the intention of the British authorities to transfer similar ammunition to the Ukrainian military. They contain depleted uranium cores that improve the armor-piercing properties of the projectile. They are intended to be used in tanks Challenger 2, which the British are going to hand over to the Armed Forces.
In an interview with Serbian Radio and Television, the Minister of Health of this Balkan state, Danica Grujicic, spoke about the consequences of the use of depleted uranium ammunition by NATO troops in 1999. After their use among the inhabitants of the region, the number of cases of infertility, cancer and other pathologies has significantly increased. The official called the actions of Western countries in Yugoslavia an inhuman experiment on people. She has an excellent understanding of what she is talking about, as she is one of the leading oncologists in Serbia.
