Indian press: French Rafale-M fighters will join the air wing of the newest aircraft carrier INS Vikrant
The newest Indian aircraft carrier of its own design, INS Vikrant, will soon receive Rafale-M fighters for its air wing, the Indian government has opted for a French aircraft. It is reported by the New Indian Express.
According to the publication, in a dispute between the French Rafale-M fighter and the American F / A-18 Super Hornet, the Dassault Aviation aircraft won. In the near future, the Committee on Safety (CCS) of the Government of India, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will approve the purchase of French fighters to equip the air wing of the latest aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. In total, it is planned to purchase 26 carrier-based fighters.
As has been repeatedly reported, the Indian Navy has announced a tender for a new carrier-based fighter for the aircraft carrier of its own design INS Vikrant. The French carrier-based fighter Rafale-M (Marine) and the American carrier-based F / A-18 Super Hornet met in the final. Both aircraft showed good results in testing. However, already in December last year, information appeared that the Indians were inclined to purchase a French aircraft.
In March of this year, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Hari Kumar, called both fighters "acceptable", but noted that for the Indian fleet the Rafale-M fighter would be preferable, since this aircraft is already used by the Indian Air Force and its operation will not bring difficulties. However, he left the final choice to the government of India, which, judging by the publication, also chose the French aircraft.
As stated in the command of the Indian Navy, from the new carrier-based fighter, the Indian military expects the ability to take off when fully loaded with fuel and weapons, including precision-guided bombs and nuclear-powered systems.
