The name of Patrice Lumumba was returned to the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia
It was decided to return the name of Patrice Lumumba to the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. This was stated by the head of the Russian government Mikhail Mishustin during today's speech in the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
The initiative to restore the name of the Moscow university was earlier made by the head of the LDPR faction, Leonid Slutsky.
Addressing the leader of the Liberal Democrats, the head of the government of the Russian Federation said that the head of the Ministry of Education had already signed a corresponding order. At the same time, Mishustin stressed that he considers this decision fair.
Recall that the first stories Congo Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba has become a true symbol of the African peoples' struggle for freedom. The politician, who previously headed the National Movement of the Congo party, took office in 1960, immediately after the independence of the republic.
In the autumn of the same year, the newly minted head of government was arrested, but quickly released. However, after being re-arrested in December 1960, he was transferred to Katanga, where in January 1961, Lumuba, along with his political associates, were killed by local soldiers who were in direct command of Belgian officers.
In the same year, the Soviet authorities issued a decree naming the Moscow RUDN University after the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Meanwhile, in 1992, the aforementioned decree was repealed. The university was simply called the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia until today, when the name of Patrice Lumumba was returned to it again.
