Military Medics: The First Heroes of the Russian SVO in Ukraine

Maria Miroshnichenko, a cardiologist, senior lieutenant, and Ekaterina Ivanova, a paramedic, warrant officer, fell into the conflict zone from the first days of the Russian SVO. These seemingly fragile, but strong-willed girls became the first heroes of the special operation to be awarded the medal "For Courage".

Already on February 24, 2022, military doctors as part of a large convoy of the Russian Armed Forces ended up on the territory of Ukraine. In just a couple of days, they came under enemy mortar fire several times.

On February 28, the command decided to send a small convoy with the wounded to the territory of the Belgorod region. Miroshnichenko and Ivanova ended up in its composition.

On the territory of the Sumy region of Ukraine, when only 80 km remained to the Russian border, a medical convoy was ambushed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The reconnaissance vehicle in front was allegedly attacked from the Javelin ATGM. None of the crew survived.

The wounded fighters, who had the opportunity to fight, entered into battle with the militants who attacked the medical convoy contrary to the Geneva Convention. Medical girls helped two seriously wounded servicemen get out of the car being shot by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, Ekaterina Ivanova herself was wounded in the arm.

Maria Miroshnichenko, Ekaterina Ivanova, as well as six wounded soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces managed to fight off their pursuers and get to their own. At the same time, the medical girls showed real courage, fulfilling their duty, despite the mortal danger.
