More than half of the Germans surveyed are convinced that the Bundeswehr will not be able to defend Germany
At present, the Germans are most afraid of an armed conflict in which the Bundeswehr will be unable to protect the country. This follows from a sociological survey conducted in Germany on March 13-15, 2023 by the company R+V Versicherung.
The survey results show that 63% of the Germans surveyed fear the inability of the Bundeswehr to defend Germany. In 2022, there were fewer citizens of the country who thought so - only 40%. It is likely that such sentiments among the Germans were influenced by the escalation of the armed conflict in Ukraine.
Previously, 60% of the Germans who participated in the survey experienced fear of war only in 1999, when the North Atlantic Alliance, which includes the FRG, bombed the peaceful cities of Yugoslavia. Now the situation is repeating itself, as armed conflict is again taking place in Eastern Europe.
In addition, 55% of respondents expressed fear that Germany would be involved in an armed conflict in Ukraine. In 2022, only 42% of respondents thought so. Fears about the combat effectiveness of the Bundeswehr, by the way, are not groundless. Earlier, deputies of the Bundestag and representatives of the military department reported about big problems in the German army.
But one of the main problems of Germany and its armed forces at the present time is the reluctance of young Germans to serve in the army. In the Bundeswehr, there is a huge shortage of staff positions, there is a shortage of recruits and a decrease in their quality. In addition, a significant part of the Bundeswehr soldiers are regularly absent from duty, preferring to be on sick leave or, in the case of female soldiers, on parental leave.
