Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov: Russia and the United States now have no common ground on the START issue
Russia currently has no points of contact with the United States on issues related to START. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov.
Speaking at an event held as part of the Valdai Discussion Club, the Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that the Russian side cannot even consider any notifications coming from the United States, because this treaty has been formally suspended, as a result of which there is no opportunity to deal with this activities. Otherwise, it will be a violation of federal law.
Ryabkov also added that the Russian authorities are ready to resume discussions with the American side on returning to START, but only after Washington changes its hostile anti-Russian policy. The Deputy Foreign Minister urged the US authorities to change their minds and "stop playing with fire."
The Deputy Foreign Minister recalled that the Russian side presented to the US government all the legal arguments that served as the reason for the suspension of participation in the START, and the statements of the US authorities to the contrary are an attempt to ignore. However, despite this, the Russian authorities are ready to additionally "chew" the American side the legal arguments for the suspension of this international agreement.
Ryabkov stressed that the statements by the American side that Washington does not consider Russia to have suspended its participation in the DNSV are nothing more than "another example of how the US authorities are inventing themselves in terms of denying what is happening in the world."
