Sudan revised the agreement on the establishment of a naval base of the Russian fleet in the country
Sudan completed the revision of the agreement with Russia on the establishment of a Russian naval base in the country fleet. According to the Associated Press, the situation is in favor of Moscow.
The Sudanese military approved the creation of a base for the Russian Navy in the country, a decision on this was made following a visit to Sudan by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Now the agreement needs to be ratified, this will be done by the new government of Sudan, which will be elected in the near future. Today, power in the country is in the hands of the military, who in December signed a framework agreement with a number of political parties to form a government.
- said one of the Sudanese officials.
At the beginning of 2021, information appeared that the Russian Navy would receive a new logistics center in Sudan, which would allow Russia to control the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. Moscow and Khartoum have entered into a preliminary agreement providing for the construction of a Russian base in Port Sudan. The agreement allowed no more than four ships of the Russian Navy, including warships with a nuclear power plant, to be at the logistics point at the same time. Russia will have to notify Sudan 12 hours before the arrival of its ships and three hours before they leave. According to the project, the number of the Russian contingent in the new MTO point will not exceed 300 people.
The appearance of Russia in this region did not like the United States, which began to put pressure on Khartoum. As a result, the agreement was postponed indefinitely. By the way, Eritrea, neighboring Sudan, has already offered Russia to set up a naval base on its territory.
