Pentagon: We are confident that the balloon that appeared in the sky over the US belongs to China

Balloon with shadow from the ISS

A little over two years after China deployed a "balloon" system for detecting missiles and tracking missile launches, the United States announced that one of these balloons had appeared over American territory.

Recall that in November 2020, the Japanese press reported the formation in China of a “group of balloons”, which, together with space satellites, is capable of tracking rocket launches. Such balloons are placed at altitudes of up to 100 km for observation with signal exchange with satellites, which in turn transmit information to the command center. Then it was reported that China tested such balloons in the area of the Spratly Islands, an archipelago whose ownership is disputed by various countries of East Asia.

Now the Pentagon has recorded the appearance of a "balloon of unknown origin" in the sky over the United States. A spokesman for the US Department of Defense said he was "confident that the balloon belongs to China."

From the statement of the official:

The balloon is located at an altitude that exceeds the echelons of commercial traffic. So far, he does not pose a physical and military threat to people on earth.

The official added that the decision was made not to shoot down this aerial object.

In China, the Pentagon's statements have not yet been officially commented on.

Previously, experts noted that when at an altitude of up to 100 km, the view of the balloon cameras is tens, or even hundreds, of thousands of square kilometers. At the same time, the resolution of images and videos is much higher than that which can be achieved at the moment with satellite monitoring of the earth's surface.

They noted! And expert ethics does not allow you to calculate the base of the cone?!

The altitude record for an unmanned balloon is 53,0 km; the balloon was launched by JAXA on May 25, 2002 from Iwate Prefecture, Japan. This is the highest height ever reached by such devices. Something 100 km is doubtful. Double the record...

Even if 40 km, not every air defense system is capable of shooting down at such a height. Ours would at least hang 5 of these over 404.

We must take into account the experience of the Chinese ... excellent work ... cheap, practical and effective.
Satellites at this altitude are expensive, and the balloon is just right.

They are launched according to the wind rose, and this is the choice of a place, depending on which direction it is necessary for it to fly. The United States during the Soviet era periodically launched them in the direction of our territory.

It is high time to hang over the Donbass, over the controlled territory of course. The Americans have a tethered cable, the length of the cable and therefore the rise of 7 and a half kilometers, the suspended radar sees up to 400 km. It works like an AWACS aircraft, but does not consume fuel, etc. You can use a camera with a good zoom and see enemy movements ...

in the United States said that one of these balloons appeared over American territory
And what kind of "wind" brought him there from China across the Pacific Ocean? If it is really Chinese, and even more so with equipment for monitoring missile launches, then why did the Americans decide not to shoot it down? Somehow everything does not fit into the American logic. Then with one movement of the hand they shoot down a passenger plane, assuming that it is a military plane and poses a threat to an American ship in the Indian Ocean, and then a Chinese reconnaissance balloon over the United States and such a boring reaction.

During WWII, the Japanese launched Fu-Go high-altitude balloons to bomb the United States. There, at certain heights, there are strong and very stable air currents. So flying is not a problem at all. The speed is about 100 km / h, the Japanese planned for a flight of 8000 km for three days

100 km is already space! A defeat at this altitude can already be interpreted similarly to a satellite attack ... And what will prevent you from receiving a "reply" from Amer's satellites in low orbit? Well, then what, "answer" for "response"?

Today the material would be on this topic, let me copy it:
“This is the thing. These balloons fly very high. In the stratosphere

They barely reflect the radio signal, so they were almost never shot down by air defense missiles with a radar principle and by no one, they don’t care in line with a cannon, because they have a cellular structure and need a special anti-aerostatic projectile, the feature of which was an ultra-sensitive fuse that could be cocked by touching the thinnest balloon shells.

And their presence on airplanes is a big question. In the USSR, special aircraft were allocated for the destruction of ADA and special litaks with special weapons were developed.

Well, the most effective (and, in fact, the only) method remains an attack with missiles with an infrared seeker in an attempt to capture the side of the balloon heated by the Sun.

All the talk about the fact that the Americans do not want to shoot down, of course, is nonsense. Can not.

Either the characteristics of the weapons of the litaks do not allow, or the skill of the pilots.

But once again I will repeat. Balloons are a very difficult target.

And if ordinary residents of the United States did not see this Chinese probe, the Pentagon would pretend that nothing had happened.

Now try to sort it out and explain how the first army of the planet cannot shoot down an enemy balloon over the country.

Is it possible for a balloon to rise to such a height? "I hesitate"
ps Most likely, the Americans simply do not have weapons capable of shooting down such balloons. Let's remember the history of V. Myasishchev's M-17/55 aircraft.

They have nothing to knock him down. A missile with a radar seeker will not target him. EPR is close to zero. With the IR GOS, the same is unlikely. Planes rise up to a maximum of 25-30 km. Do not blow up a nuclear charge over America for the sake of this balloon :)

The flight altitude is clearly not a record one, the ball is large, it moves slowly, you can probably damage the shell with a laser beam and it will fall, and they can also have a laser on the plane

        Boeing YAL-1:
The program was closed in 2011 due to a reduction in the military budget - the US Department of Defense recognized the development as not applicable in practice and expensive. By the time the project was closed, the laser power had been increased to a megawatt.[1]
In February 2012, the aircraft went into storage at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance Group (AMARG), better known as The Boneyard.[9]
In September 2014, the aircraft was scrapped.
