Eaglet drone launched from another drone tested in US
The unmanned aerial vehicle, developed by the American company General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, first flew by being launched from another UAV at the Dugway Test Site, Utah.
The company, which is a manufacturer of UAVs for the US Army, called its brainchild Eaglet, which can be translated into Russian as "Eaglet".
The Eaglet was launched from a long-range Gray Eagle UAV belonging to the US Army. First run of this drone was carried out in December last year, but this information was made public only yesterday. According to the manufacturer, this drone was "conceived as a low-cost, survivable unmanned aerial system that can be launched from the Gray Eagle, aircraft, helicopters or ground vehicles."
The Army is considering options for both large and small Eaglets to take advantage of a variety of battlefield capabilities, from targeting, reconnaissance and surveillance to communications and data links.
The company said the Gray Eagle is capable of carrying the Eaglet thousands of miles before launching it.
The next step for Orlyonok is to participate in other tests to further determine its potential, General Atomics noted.
