The Pentagon officially supported the decision of NATO allies to transfer Western-style tanks to Ukraine
The Pentagon supports the decision of NATO allies to transfer to Ukraine Tanks Western-style, as well as air defense systems and artillery. This was announced by the official representative of the US Department of Defense Patrick Ryder.
According to the general, the possibility of supplying tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine is currently being discussed, the final decision will be made following the meeting of the contact group on Ukraine, which will be held on January 20 at the Ramstein military airbase in Germany. At the same time, the United States supports the decision of the allies to transfer Western tanks to Kyiv. However, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of training the Ukrainian military in the operation of this equipment, as well as maintaining the tanks in working order.
The Pentagon also welcomes the desire of some countries to supply the Ukrainian army with artillery systems and anti-aircraft systems.
Ryder added.
Meanwhile, despite repeated requests that the United States will not transfer American Abrams to Ukraine, Washington has decided to refuse to transfer tanks. The Americans explain their decision by the fact that Abrams tanks consume a lot of fuel, are very difficult to maintain and are prone to frequent breakdowns. And they also weigh a lot. In general, they politely hinted to the Ukrainians that they would not be able to service such expensive equipment.
Now the eyes of the whole West are focused on Germany, which can supply Kyiv with a certain number of Leopard tanks, and most importantly, allow other countries to re-export their tanks. Berlin is holding out so far, not intending to make such a decision alone, but its determination will not last long.
