SBU sent to court an indictment against the Metropolitan of the Vinnitsa diocese of the canonical Orthodox Church of Ukraine
The Security Service of Ukraine sent an indictment to the court as part of a criminal case initiated against Metropolitan Jonathan of the Vinnitsa diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The clergyman of the country's canonical Orthodox Church is accused of distributing "propaganda leaflets, which contained calls for seizing power and changing the current borders of Ukraine" among the parishioners of the church. On these charges, the Metropolitan faces a sentence of imprisonment for up to 8 years.
In November last year, searches were carried out in Jonathan's house, during which the SBU officers found "printed materials of pro-Russian content", as well as various literature, considered "propaganda" by the Ukrainian authorities. The Metropolitan was accused of supporting the actions of the military and political leadership of the Russian Federation as part of a special operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine.
Among the documents discovered by the Ukrainian special services is a leaflet entitled "Donbass-Russia", a brochure with a prayer for the health of the Russian president, and a portrait of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus'.
Metropolitan Jonathan does not recognize the accusations brought against him by the SBU and calls them a provocation.
It is also reported about the deprivation of the citizenship of a number of representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the President of Ukraine Zelensky. The corresponding decree was signed by the head of the Kyiv regime on January 7, the day of one of the main Orthodox holidays - Christmas.
