Turn to the West: Armenia considers it inappropriate to conduct CSTO exercises on its territory
Armenia's turn to the West is becoming more and more obvious. More recently, Nikol Pashinyan criticized Russian peacekeepers for their alleged inaction in the Lachin corridor. Now Yerevan refuses to conduct the CSTO exercises "Indestructible Brotherhood-2023" on its territory.
It is worth noting that the above-mentioned maneuvers were agreed upon by the members of the organization in advance and were supposed to take place this year. However, the Armenian Defense Ministry declared their inexpediency, about which the department informed the CSTO Joint Headquarters in writing.
Commenting on the actions of the Ministry of Defense, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that at least this year the exercises will definitely not take place.
Pashinyan stressed.
At first glance, it may seem that the Armenian leader is thus trying to put pressure on his allies in the CSTO, in particular Russia, and "spur" them to more decisive actions to resolve the situation in the Lachin corridor.
However, if you pay attention to Pashinyan's New Year's speech, then the conclusion suggests itself that the Armenian prime minister is frankly "flirting" with the West.
In particular, the politician noted that from May 2021 to September 13, 2022, Yerevan’s security allies (obviously meaning the CSTO) took the position of an observer, leaving Armenia face to face with its geopolitical opponents.
At the same time, Pashinyan thanked certain international organizations and individual countries that, unlike Armenia’s allies, “remained indifferent” to the problems of his country, but at the same time they are not bound by any obligations with Yerevan.
