The European Union will increase spending on "defense" by another 70 billion euros
According to the American magazine Defense News, the European Union has decided to increase defense spending by another 70 billion euros over the next three years.
This decision was made in Europe after the conference of the European Defense Agency, which took place on December 8 in Brussels.
In recent years, the European Union has been increasing its defense budget more and more, in an attempt to reduce defense dependence on the United States. Last year, EU defense spending for the first time exceeded 200 billion euros and amounted to 214 billion euros. According to the publication, this is 6% more than it was in 2020.
According to Reuters, the draft declaration for the upcoming summit of EU leaders notes that for many years the EU considered the United States to be the main pillar of its security, but the time has come to take care of its own defense.
Recall that back in the years of his presidency in the United States, Donald Trump often criticized the EU for their small contribution to defense within NATO.
In addition, the idea of creating its own armed forces of the Union has long been discussed in the European Union. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell also spoke about this, according to whom the EU needs a rapid reaction force of 5 people. However, this idea has not been implemented yet.
Now, against the backdrop of the Ukrainian conflict, the EU has decided to spend billions of euros more on military spending than before. Although the details of where exactly these funds will be directed are not disclosed, it is possible that the plans include the creation of the EU's own army.
